BBC star presenter and former football player Gary Lineker will '
retire
' from presenting his flagship program

, which he has headlined since 1999, the broadcaster has announced.

Gary Lineker's recent social media activity violates our principles...
(He should not)
take sides on political matters
," she wrote in a statement.
The former Tottenham striker had denounced on March 7 a bill against illegal immigration recently presented by the British government.

It's just an absolutely cruel policy directed against the most vulnerable people in language no different from that used by Germany in the 1930s
," he wrote on Twitter.
The BBC had announced that a "
frank conversation
" would be held with the former center forward of the Three Lions, after Downing Street had deemed
these remarks "
unacceptable ".

The controversial text presented by the government on Tuesday provides for the rapid expulsion of migrants arriving through this channel and prohibits them from seeking asylum, and subsequently from settling in the United Kingdom or applying for British nationality.
It also facilitates the detention of migrants until their deportation to a third country deemed safe.
The executive thus hopes to discourage the tens of thousands of Channel crossings on makeshift boats.
