T-shirt weather in the middle of March - even though you were still wearing a winter jacket the day before.

Two weather experts explain what's behind it.

Munich – A turbulent up and down on the thermometer is imminent in the next three days.

In the night to Saturday (March 11th) it cools down significantly.

Even during the day, temperatures remain around zero degrees.

On the edge of the Alps and in the mountains there can be snow and sleet showers, even up to 15 centimeters of fresh snow and the roads can become slippery.

It will also remain chilly on Sunday night, with temperatures around and below freezing.

Extreme weather in Bavaria: 20 degrees on Monday - T-shirt weather in March

Summer follows winter – but only for one day.

"15 to 19 degrees are expected on Monday," says Guido Wolz from the German Weather Service in Munich.

"The peak value could be around 20 degrees - if the foehn is right at the edge of the Alps."

According to Wolz, it is not unusual for March to compete with April with its rapid mood swings and large temperature differences.

“Currently, the weather is quite brisk.

But we mustn't forget that in Central Europe we are in the middle of a westerly wind zone," he says.

High and low pressure areas, subpolar and tropical air alternate here.

"On Monday, a warm front with very mild sea air will move west from the Canary Islands via Spain." If the sun still shines, it's t-shirt weather.

When do strong temperature differences in spring damage the animal and plant world?

Wolfgang Kurtz, head of the DWD's Agrometeorological Research Center in Freising, is less worried about a flash in the pan.

"However, if there are several days in a row during this time of year when such high pressure conditions prevail, this can certainly disrupt the vegetation dormancy - and give plants and insects the impetus to get going."

According to Kurtz, such strong temperature fluctuations are only devastating in full spring.

Around the end of April to mid-May, when late frost severely damages apple cultivation by dying off the blossoms.

Long-term weather trend: It's getting warmer and warmer

For agro-meteorologists there are not just four, but ten seasons.

Spring consists of pre-spring, first spring and full spring.

"The fact that it was quite warm for several days in a row in January this year had an effect on the early spring," says Kurtz.

"The lilies of the valley and hazel bushes were there four weeks earlier than usual."

The phenological indicator plant that researchers use to measure the beginning of the first spring is forsythia.

Some DWD reporters have already seen these shrubs blooming.

With their yellow blossoms, they too are a good two weeks too early.

This also shows the long-term trend: It is getting warmer and warmer.
