In recent months, the Galim company has experienced a wave of attacks and vandalism of the buses it operates in the city. The company stopped its services in the affected neighborhoods, where the cases repeat again and again. According to the suspicion, the residents of the city do not look favorably on the activity of the lines, and therefore damage the vehicles

The pictures of the shattered windshields of the buses of the "Galim" company, which operates the public transportation service in Berhat, recall the days of the riots during the "Guardian of the Walls" operation.

From the materials that came to me, voila!

A very difficult picture emerges of more than 60 buses that have been damaged in the last few months throughout the city in varying degrees of severity, following stone pelting.

The background for the cases, it is suspected, is the anger of the residents, who do not look favorably on the traffic of buses on their streets.

According to them, they are not interested in passengers looking into the houses and yards, and in addition, it is an intrusion into their territory and unnecessary noise.

The damage does not amount only to damage to the buses, but also damage to the company's ability to provide service to the residents of Rahat.

In some of the city's neighborhoods, where stone-throwing incidents recur again and again - the line service has been shut down for months.

The bus company estimates the damages at hundreds of thousands of shekels, and recently began the process of testing the protection of the buses against the stone throwing.

The estimated cost is about two million shekels directly, to which must be added the higher operating costs of the buses.

The frustration among the Galim company and the drivers working for it is great, especially in light of the police's inability to prevent or handle these cases, despite the repeated complaints.

According to Galim officials, every incident is reported to the police, but in practice the response is "bureaucratic" and does not have a solution.

"We file a complaint and that's basically the end of it, until the police asked us what we propose to do," the sources said.

The Ministry of Transportation also reports on these cases, and specifically the National Authority for Public Transportation.

"The Ministry of Transportation is committed to the safety of passengers and drivers in public transportation," it said.

"Accordingly, wherever an incident of violence has occurred and there is a fear of further incidents of violence, the operator may request that service be diverted to alternative routes. In the city of Rahat, there have been several incidents of stone throwing that damaged buses, and at the request of the operator, the service was diverted from the neighborhoods where the incidents occurred."

As far as dealing with the phenomenon is concerned, the Ministry of Transportation has no solution either.

The Galim company requested that the ministry participate in the protection of the buses, and the ministry clarified that the request is being examined and a decision has not yet been made on the issue.

Meanwhile, the Rahat municipality tries to downplay the extent of the phenomenon, saying that "these are very isolated cases" - a claim that is far from reflecting the reality of dozens of buses that are damaged on a regular basis.

The municipality also claims that these are minors who throw the stones, and they are not of legal age.

Despite the shutdown of bus service in entire neighborhoods for months, from the municipality's point of view it is nothing less than "one of the best public transportation in the country, with 800,000 trips per year registered," of which a significant portion is for students in the city's education system, which has 29,000 students.

"We held meetings on the matter and decisions were made on informing young people," said Mayor Rahat Faiz Abu Sahiban.

"The municipality is promoting a new bus parking project in the west of the city."

The police stated that "every report received by the police regarding stone throwing in the area, in general, is dealt with immediately through field scans and the use of investigative measures on the overt and covert level, with the aim of locating those involved and bringing them to justice. The police work in cooperation with the bus company for the safety of the drivers and passengers, and even hold a dialogue Advocacy among the populations living in the area and near the roads regarding the seriousness of involvement in these types of events."
