The left-wing opposition politician and former Greek finance minister Varoufakis was attacked by unknown persons while visiting a restaurant.
He himself speaks of hired thugs.
Athens - Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis was attacked and injured by hooded men in Athens on Friday evening.
The left-wing opposition politician was discovered by a group of around 20 people in a restaurant, several Greek media reported on Saturday.

First, the 61-year-old Varoufakis was insulted from the street.
The former Greek finance minister then went out the door, where several hooded men attacked him, threw him to the ground, kicked him and slapped him in the face.
The ex-minister suffered a broken nose and was treated in hospital.
By they bye: They were not anarchists, leftists, communists or members of any movement.
Thugs for hire they were (and looked it) who clumsily invoked the lie that I sold out to the troika.
We shall not let them divide us.

Varoufakis blasted: party condemns attack on ex-minister as 'fascist'
Varoufakis himself thanked Twitter for the wave of solidarity that he received after the attack.
After being attacked and suffering a broken nose, he also denied reports that the attackers were autonomists, anarchists or leftists.
Rather, it was hired thugs who accused him of selling Greece abroad during the debt crisis of 2015 during his tenure as finance minister.
His party Mera25 described the attack as "fascist".
The economist is a member of parliament today.
