Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro assured on Saturday March 11 that he was "
don't care
" that the international community recognizes the result of the 2024 presidential election, when he will seek a new six-year term.
"
We don't care whether they say something or not, whether they recognize or do not recognize
" the election, he assured in an interview broadcast on Saturday by state television.
"
We don't care what imperialism thinks, nor what the oligarchies think about the political, social, institutional, cultural and economic life of Venezuela
," he added.
The main opposition parties had refused to participate in the 2018 presidential election, denouncing a "
fraud
" aimed at extending Nicolás Maduro as head of state.
Fifty countries, including France and the United States, had not recognized his re-election and supported opposition leader Juan Guaido when he declared himself interim president in January 2019.
Elections at the heart of tensions
“
This Guaido's attempt was a failure, a failure, it failed.
We never cared if they said,
'
No, the president of Venezuela is Guaido
'
.
He was not president for an hour, or even a second
,” said Nicolás Maduro.

Thursday, the head of the delegation of Venezuelan power during negotiations with the opposition in Mexico, Jorge Rodriguez, conditioned an agreement on the presidential election of 2024 to the lifting of international sanctions targeting the country.
Elections and their organization are one of the main stumbling blocks in these negotiations.
The opposition wants to guarantee a " fair and transparent
" election
and asks that all potential candidates declared ineligible by the Venezuelan justice, whom it accuses of being under the orders of power, can present themselves.
"
The presidential elections will take place, the people will vote, the people will choose and we will move forward
," said Nicolás Maduro.
