The former attorney general harshly attacked the legal revolution promoted by the government, and warned that if it does not receive a ruling from the court - "the State of Israel has finished its story as part of the family of nations". However, he said he was "cautiously optimistic" about the possibility of reaching a compromise

Former legal advisor Avichai Mandelblit warned today (Sunday) that if the independence of the legal advisor institution or the Supreme Court is harmed as a result of the legal revolution, then Israel will cease to be a democracy.

"If the State of Israel wants to be ostracized from the family of nations, let the government decide that it will ignore a ruling or an injunction of the Supreme Court," he said at the Haifa University's senior economic forum.

The prices of such a step would be devastating and therefore I believe they would not dare to do so.

And if they do, each and every one of us will have to make very difficult decisions."

According to him, the country was established, as it appears from the declaration of independence, as the national state of the Jewish people and as a democratic and liberal state.

"When I asked to establish these principles in law, they told me that there was no need, that no one would ever think of harming them, and now they are seeking to harm them," he warned.

He explained that those who are on the "first line of defense" for the values of the Declaration of Independence are the Attorney General's Office and the Supreme Court, but the legislative measures being promoted today seek to harm the independence of these two bodies.

"Undermining the independence of the Attorney General's Office and the Supreme Court will lead to a situation where we will cease to be a democracy. We will become a dictatorship. If the legal advisors are appointed by the government and the judges are appointed by the government, what is left of the Declaration of Independence? It becomes a piece of paper that can be thrown in the trash," Mandelblit said.

"It is better not to reach a compromise than a bad compromise."

Mandelblit also referred to the efforts to reach a compromise, saying that "it is better not to reach a compromise than a bad compromise. I am always in favor of a compromise and in favor of negotiations, but it is impossible to compromise on the government appointing its own judges and legal advisors and its own commissioner.

It is impossible in any way to compromise the independence of the Attorney General's office and the independence of the Supreme Court."

However, the former advisor said that he has "cautious optimism" and added "It is very encouraging to see that there are large sections of the people who understand this.

We are now in 'money time' and it will happen very quickly.

The first law, apparently on the appointment of judges, will soon be passed and then the court will issue an injunction against this decision.

And as I said, if the government does not accept the ruling of the Supreme Court, the State of Israel has finished its story as part of the family of nations.

The prices for this will be devastating and I believe and hope that we will not come to that."
