Oscar 2023: With Ricardo Darín and Santiago Miter, hours away from arriving at the ceremony

2023-03-12T19:05:45.098Z

They spoke with Clarín about what 'Argentina, 1985' has already achieved, which today is going for glory.

Santiago Miter

and

Ricardo Darín

have been touring together, accompanying

Argentina, 1985

since the world premiere at the Venice Mostra, when it competed for the Golden Lion, back in September 2022. And today, in a few hours, they can make history, if the film about the historic trial of the military juntas of the last military dictatorship wins the Oscar for best international film.

We've already done many interviews with both of them, together or separately, throughout the film's run, but this one is special because it's hours before the award ceremony at the Dolby Theatre.

-Well, how are you doing, how are you?

Anxious, calm, hopeful?

-Santiago Miter:

Full of adjectives, so whatever you say I'm going to say yes, yes.

In principle, we are happy, the film had a wonderful journey, we have achieved many more things than we would have expected when we started making the film, in the midst of the pandemic.

Our only fear was not being able to make our film, that the film might be finished.

It was finished, it was exhibited in Argentina with full rooms, with a reaction from the public…

Darín and Miter spoke with "Clarín".

Tonight "Argentina, 1985" may be the third national film to win an Oscar.

-Ricardo Darín:

Fabulous.

-Miter:

Fabulous, and moving, it was exhibited in many places around the world, it was an incredible reception.

We came here to enjoy the end of a tour that has been wonderful.

Ricardo with Victoria Alonso, president of Marvel and co-producer of "Argentina, 1985", at last night's cocktail party.

-How do you feel about this that in Argentina they are waiting for them to take the third, the third statuette, that sensation so World Cup…?

-Darín:

And, that is a plus that is difficult to control, because it is a general expectation in society, a large group of people who are excited and enthusiastic.

But the truth is that we already did our work, a long time ago.

And now everything is in the hands of others.

Of course, that expectation and anxiety is understandable.

And a little we also have it.

We also try to stay calm, because we know how these things are.

-Mitre:

I love it, in a sense, I find it funny, the comparisons that Darín makes with Messi amuses me, they seem spectacular to me…

Darin:

Hahaha.

-Mitre:

It amuses me, but at the same time the cinema has nothing to do with sport.

Darin and Peter Lanzani.

"For six months we have been accompanying the pleícula on its tour around the world."

It's not a competition, really.

Miter:

No, of course.

-Darín:

Which shows how loving there is behind it, what people turn to.

Before coming here, a week before, with the fact that the date was approaching, I ran into a lot of people on the street, in my neighborhood and outside of it.

And what people have deposited in load of expectations for this event is incredible.

I mean, there's no way to embrace that, it's like you have to lower them a bit, tell them “okay, okay, calm down”.

Because it's a lot, it's a lot.

-Mitre:

The other day I told one of the directors who are nominated in the same category for the Oscar, Messi's post.

And he was surprised at how the country took a film as if it were part of its flag.

And that does not happen in the country where he is from.

And I find it a bit touching, too.

Darin:

Yes.

Not only Messi: Lionel Scaloni's post wishing luck to "Argentina 1985".

-Mitre:

How is this film taken, as something important for society.

It is logical in a sense, because it is a film about this Judgment, so important, and one that should make us feel so proud as Argentines.

On the other hand, it is true that the Oscars are a kind of icon…

-Darín:

Yes, and the most followed by everyone who has a film project in hand.

-And if they (anulo mufa) were to go on stage and so on, what would be the importance of obtaining that award for you?

-Darín

: The same as we just said, if we don't get it.

(laughs)

Lanzani and Darpin and with them, Javiera Balmaceda, from amazon, and sister of actor Pedro Pascal ("The Last of Us" and "The Mandalorian").

-Mitre:

It seems to me that awards like this one, or those of film festivals, the importance they have is that they serve to amplify the arrival of a film.

In that, then, everything that helps the film to continue watching, debating, reflecting on the film, will be a source of joy for me.

Anyway, it's over, it's already happened, it's already given us a lot.

I hope he gives us more, and I'm sure she's going to keep giving us more.

I don't know if now at the Oscar or in the future, but the film will remain.

-Darín:

It will age well.

heading to the Oscars

How are you going to get to the ceremony?

Are they going to get together sooner?

What do you have planned?

-Darín: We are many.

We are a lot.

I don't know if there is another delegation so...

"The movie has already given us a lot, and I'm sure it will continue to give us more. I don't know if it's at the Oscars now, but the movie will stay."

-Mitre:

The Irish are also a lot, huh?

They are half argentes in that, it seems to me.

-Darín:

I don't know, we'll go each one as we can.

Here I have the 152 in the corner that leaves me at the door, I have no problem.

-You are friends, for a long time, this is your second film together, after "La cordillera", are you drawing up, planning to make a new film?

-Mitre:

I want to work with Ricardo Darín more than anything in the world (Darín nudges him).

What happens is that this is a difficult guy too.

He has many projects ahead.

But I'm going to put it in...

-Darín:

We should have a project in hand, that brings good luck.

No, we'll sit down and think about something.

Ricardo Darin and Peter Lanzanim with producer Federico Posternak.

-After having spent these six months following the film everywhere, they have surely known much more.

I would like you to be able to define a quality that you, Santiago, find in him, and you in Santiago.

-Darín:

Do not force him to do this because it would be too perverse, he has already filled me with praise all my life, everywhere, and it even makes me shy.

What I can tell you about him is that every time I realize how he is evolving as a filmmaker, the clarity he has to tell a story and know where he wants to go.

And I especially highlight dealing with actors.

For me, he is part of that select group of directors who love actors.

That there are not many...

Miter:

Thank you.

Ricardo is a spectacular companion, and he is also much more than an actor.

He is a friend and he is a filmmaker, a person with whom I can talk about everything.

And also, as a fellow traveler, I think that anyone who saw him in an interview can tell that he is the most fun guy to be with.

-Darín:

We have had a good time, very good.

The Angels.
