Oscar 2023 and Axel Kuschevatzky, the Argentine on both sides of the carpet

2023-03-12T17:23:43.417Z

What are you going to ask your colleagues from 'Argentina, 1985', on the carpet that was red and today will be champagne?

It will be on both sides of the counter, or the champagne carpet, since its color this year will be different.

Axel Kuschevatzky

, who interviews the nominees there, before they enter the Dolby Theater for TNT, is a co-producer of

Argentina, 1985

, so after speaking with

Ricardo Darín

, Santiago Miter and Peter Lanzani, among others, he will run to sit in his seat at the ceremony.

We suggest that you go dressed to match the new carpet, and after mentioning an Argentine famous for his clothing, we suggest that you go as Spike Lee, multicolored.

“With sneakers and a suit”, he jokingly says (?) that he will go.

We interviewed here in West Hollywood the producer who has already won an Oscar, with

The Secret in Their Eyes

, and was nominated for another, for

Wild Tales

.

At the National Board of Review Gala, with Dolores Fonzi, Santiago Mitre, Ricardo Darín, Florencia Bas and Peter Lanzani.

-What is the runrún?

-You know that there is no runrún, the information is not filtered, unlike a local prize in Argentina...

-I mean what do people say, what is the feeling with “Argentina, 1985”, hours after the ceremony?

-I have a perspective problem, because the people with whom I have a relationship like the film, they don't tell me that they are going to vote for another one...

"All Quiet on the Front", which swept the BAFTAs in Great Britain.

"If you think about it, the BAFTA roll doesn't have Latinos...", she argues.

-“All Quiet Ahead” seems the favourite, it swept the BAFTAs in Great Britain, but on this side of the Atlantic, it didn't win much.

So…

-Just as there is no direct correlation between the European awards and the Oscar, and a relative correlation between those that occur in the United States and the Oscar, if you think about it, the BAFTA list does not have Latinos.

In Europe they tend to be endocentric.

They share some voters with the Oscar, yes, and the Golden Globe, none.

The Oscar arises from the vote of the industry.

With awards for different specialties, such as

actors, accounting for 36% of the voting members of the Academy

, what comes out at the SAG (the Actors Guild) sometimes carries over to the Oscar ceremony, and sometimes , No.

I'm very judicious in trying to guess based on what a film has won before, but yes, awards amplify the film, and give it a higher profile.

"The biggest experience of awards season was learning how to build a campaign from the inside."

-What left you this awards season, and the passage through the different international film festivals?

-The greatest experience of the awards season was learning to see how a campaign is built from within, in an ecosystem very different from the ecosystem in which both

The Secret in Their Eyes

and

Wild Tales

participated , and seeing time, energy and the commitment that leads to any film having global visibility.

It was very educational to see everything that was set in motion and all the energy and focus that a film requires on a path like this.

So, in that sense, it was very enriching.

I went to the debates, I went to the BAFTAs, obviously the Venice premiere, the San Sebastian screening.

I was at awards ceremonies like the Critics' Choice Awards, the Hollywood Critics Awards, the Satellite Awards.

It was also very interesting, because at these awards ceremonies you run across the same people all the time, and you discover that everyone suffers as much as we do, that no one goes to the awards ceremonies with peace of mind saying “Well, what about if I don't win?

No problem".

Everyone is anxious from us, making a movie in Argentina, to the stars and directors of the biggest movies.

-You are based in Los Angeles, but you are going to continue producing films in Argentina.

-Yeah.

I am part of the production company Infinity Hill, we are producing the new film by Celina Murga,

The aroma of freshly cut grass

, starring Marina de Tavira, Oscar nominee for

Roma

, and Joaquín Furriel, with Martin Scorsese as executive producer.

Martin Scorsese is producing the new Celina Murga film, in which Kuschevatzky is also involved in production.

I am a co-producer of three other Argentine films that have not yet been announced and I am also lucky to be part of

La hija de Dios

, the docuseries that tells the life of Diego Maradona as seen by Dalma, one of his daughters, directed by Lorena Muñoz.

For me it is important.

I will always continue making films in Argentina, and in other countries.

The questions on the carpet

-What are you going to ask the Argentine team on the carpet that was red and today will be champagne?

I still haven't the slightest idea.

As has happened in

Wild Tales

, among others, it's always great fun to see your friends you've been working with for years on the other side of the rug.

It will be very difficult for us to contain ourselves.

I think what's going to happen is that we're going to laugh too much, and I don't know how much the public is going to be interested.

In the second row in San Sebastián, where "Argentina, 1985" won the Audience Award.

-Do you already have your seat to run from the red carpet to the ceremony at the Dolby Theater?

-I have my seat for the ceremony.

Fortunately.

It is scientifically proven that I can get from one side to the other, in a hurry, but it is possible.

-You will not be able to thank, if necessary, but if you could, what would your speech be?

-The most important thing would be to thank the people in real life who made the Trial of the Boards possible and who worked tirelessly during these decades so that a collective memory existed.

Above all, to the victims of State terrorism, who deserve the greatest respect and that the story be told and transmitted from generation to generation in a more immediate field.

"If it doesn't happen, the most beautiful gift that this film has to give us is that this story continues to be told for a long time," he says.

This movie exists because there were 5,000 people working, in all roles, from transportation, catering to the leads.

And this film is also a bit of each of those 5,000 people, of those 5,000 families.

And in a very intimate and very personal place, we, with my wife and children, came to live here in Los Angeles very shortly before the pandemic.

It was very hard, so I owe my wife and boys more than anyone else for their support in these very complex periods.

And also to my friend and mentor, Peter Bogdanovich, who is grateful in the closing titles of the film, also because he is always there.

He is like a second dad who is always there protecting me.

But the truth is that the one who has to give the speech is (Santiago) Mitre, and what I want most in the world is to listen to Mitre.

And if it doesn't happen, because those things are also possible, the most beautiful gift that this film has to give us is that this story continues to be told for a long time.

Everyone would say that this is the most beautiful legacy that

Argentina leaves us, 1985

.

The Angels.
