Oscar Awards: the 6 most shocking scandals in the history of the ceremony

2023-03-12T18:47:50.556Z

On the day of the Oscars 2023, a tour of the most striking episodes that took place live at the award ceremony before the Will Smith era.

Will Smith's slap to Chris Rock left the bar very high in terms of scandals at the Oscars.

The 2022 edition will be well remembered for this and it will hardly be another irruption of its caliber in the coming years.

But, even so, last year's anomaly was not the only one in the history of the Hollywood Academy ceremony:

there were other awards that also had their own

.

Since its first installment, in 1929,

the Oscars have been the scene of controversy

.

Everything happened.

Next to issue number 95, let's review, then, six of them -besides Will's, of course- that are worth remembering.

Let's see

.

1. Racism and mystery

The 1940 edition was the first that began to talk about the scandal.

It was the ceremony of the classic

Gone with the Wind

.

In that year,

Hattie McDaniel

became the first African-American actress to win a statuette and that did not please a certain racist sector of the industry that did not approve of her recognition.

In addition, black actors and actresses had not been invited to the gala.

All this, added to the way of describing the slavery of Gone with the Wind and the fact that Hattie's statuette mysteriously disappeared after the death of the actress, covered this award with a veil of suspicion.

2. The Marlon Brando Boycott

In 1973, Brando won Best Actor for

The Godfather

, but did not show up to receive it.

He instead sent

Sacheen Littlefeather

, a Native American activist.

Littlefeather explained to the audience that Brando was rejecting the award as a boycott of the way Native Americans were represented in the industry.

Brando made the decision in the midst of a convulsive social context caused by a protest over Wounded Knee, a massacre in which hundreds of natives died at the hands of the US army.

The surprising and impressive presence of Sacheen marked the history of the Oscars on fire.

Because of who she was, because of Brando's rebellion and, obviously, because behind it was one of the most important films in cinema history.

For his work in The Godfather, Marlon Brando sends Sacheen Littlefeather to receive the Oscar in his place.

3. The Naked Intruder

46th Oscars (1974)

At the 1974 Oscars,

David Niven and a naked intruder

starred in a singular moment that would be remembered forever.

Just before the iconic actor was due to present an award, a naked man ran past him.

Diven surfed the setback like a champ.

"Isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will get in his life is by stripping naked and showing his flaws?" the actor said.

Finally, later it would be known that the unexpected character was the nudist

Robert Opel

, a photographer and artist who, with great cunning, had managed to circumvent the apparently inviolable security of the event.

4. Very lovey-dovey brothers

Angelina Jolie

attended  the 2000 Oscars

with her brother

James Haven. They were shown together on the red carpet and in the room they starred in one of the rarest moments of the ceremony.

After winning an award for her work on

Girl, Interrupted

, Angelina said in front of everyone that she was in love with James and the two were later photographed kissing on the mouth in the living room.

Some time after incest rumors surfaced between them, Haven commented in an interview with People that "it was an amazing moment, but totally misconstrued."

James Haven is also an actor.

He is currently 49 years old.

5. #OscarsSoWhite

In 2016, shortly after

#BlackLivesMatter

, there were no African-American actors nominated.

None of the 20 actors and actresses, in any category.

Consequently, the hashtag-response, #OscarsSoWhite

(Oscars so white), became strong in networks

as a way of protest.

After that delivery, the Academy pluralized the nominations much more, renewing the discussions...

6. La La... no, sorry, Moonlight

Confusion reigns at the 2017 Oscars. La La Land or Moonlight?

The 2017 ceremony will be forever remembered for its epic finale.

The presenters

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway

were supposed to say the winner for Best Picture, but when they opened the envelope to reveal the winning title and, after seconds of hesitation, they said

"

La La Land

" led to disaster.

While La La Land producer

Jordan Horowitz

was giving his acceptance speech -with many people in charge of the project on stage-, two members of the company's staff who monitor the winners approached him and Beatty informed them that they had opened the wrong envelope.

Finally, after having understood what was happening, Horowitz announced what neither he, nor director

Damien

Chazelle,

nor

Ryan Gosling

wanted to hear: "This has been a mistake, Moonlight (Moonlight) is the winner of Best Picture .

It's not a joke, get on stage."
