Rabbi Meir Mazoz, one of the prominent Sephardi rabbis in the ultra-Orthodox sector, said last week during his weekly class that Baruch Goldstein who murdered 27 Muslim worshipers in the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron "prevented a very great danger", in his words.

In his lesson, Rabbi Mazuz claimed that "in the Cave of the Patriarchs, the Arabs put axes, guns, knives under the carpets on which they pray - and there was a very great danger. Thanks to this Jew, the danger was avoided."

In February 1994, Goldstein murdered 27 Muslim worshipers and injured 125 of them.

Rabbi Mazoz said these things in the lesson that preceded the holiday of Purim and spoke for several minutes about the event that happened 29 years ago.

"And here on the day of Purim, one Jew entered the Cave of the Patriarchs in the morning and shot thirty Arabs to death - this made a big noise in the country," he said.

"Prime Minister at the time Yitzhak Rabin called him a "dirty Jew". When they (terrorists) kill so many, they are clean. Gentiles are perfectly fine, but a Jew is dirty. Why dirty?"

Known for his extreme right-wing views.

Rabbi Mazoz, who often incorporates language refinements and acronyms into his sermons, quoted from one of the verses and wondered aloud in front of his students, "What is a gold stone in Yiddish? Goldstein. This is this man. He did it on his own, he didn't ask anyone, he did everything by himself. Research and research and research and see He did it alone. He said to his wife: 'I'm going to pray, he went with a rifle in his hand.'"
