Pony brand self-service electric bikes will be less numerous in the streets of Bordeaux in the days to come.
About a hundred vehicles (out of a fleet of 550 electric bikes in the city) were damaged this Sunday during a fire in a company warehouse, rue de Lajaunie, on the right bank of the Garonne.
Thanks to the intervention of the fire brigade, only an area of approximately 200 m2 of the building was destroyed.
Most of the 5,000 m2 warehouse therefore managed to escape the flames.
"
It's not a hundred bikes left to smoke
," tempers
Guillaume Leroux, public relations manager at Pony, with Le
Figaro .
In the aftermath of the events, the company believes it can recover and clean the frames licked by the flames, to equip other bikes with them and “
put them back on the streets
”.
In addition, "
the start of the fire was not close to the bicycles, so the rapid intervention of the firefighters made it possible to avoid excessive damage
", specifies the company.

If the exact causes of the fire are not yet known, the first elements indicate that "
it does not come from the batteries
" of the self-service vehicles, because these are waterproof.
It is a powerful gust of wind in the night from Friday to Saturday which would have torn off part of the roof.
The water seeped inside and ended up “
damaging something which created the fire
”, specifies Guillaume Leroux.
The flames began to spread around 6 a.m. on Sunday, but the alarm system with which the workshop is equipped made it possible to notify the firefighters immediately.
