BRUSSELS -

The Transport Minister of the Czech Republic, Martin Kupka, convened a summit today in Strasbourg between the transport ministers of eleven EU countries, including Italy, opposed to the Brussels proposal on the new Euro 7 standards for

emissions cars and vans.

On the table of the meeting, scheduled between noon and three in the afternoon on the sidelines of the plenary of the European Parliament, there will also be the agreement on the stop to diesel and petrol cars from 2035, on which 'Italy and Germany have already expressed their own opposition.

The invitation to participate in the summit, as indicated by some sources close to the dossier, was extended by the Czech Republic to the transport ministers of

Italy, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia and Spain .

A coalition united by skepticism towards the new Euro 7 standards, still in the negotiation phase in Brussels, which would require car manufacturers to make huge investments to eliminate pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, however in the face of the stop to internal combustion engines foreseen in 2035.

Czech minister Kupka announced that Prague has

"reservations" on the European Commission's proposal and intends to discuss "the fundamental points" with the other opposing governments to arrive at a "common position" on the modification of the Euro 7 standards

.

However, the political stalemate on the ban on diesel and petrol engines in 2035 will also be at the center of the debate. The controversial regulation, already agreed at EU level, was blocked at the time of final ratification by a blocking minority made up of Italy, Germany, Poland and Bulgaria.

Tensions are high especially within the government coalition in Berlin, with the German Transport Minister, Volker Wissing, who is asking for the green light to use e-fuels,

The European Commission "will not participate" in today's summit in Strasbourg among countries skeptical

of the new Euro 7 standards and the EU agreement to stop petrol and diesel cars in 2035. EU spokeswoman Dana Spinant said this during the daily press briefing.

"We are ready to clarify the concerns expressed by the member countries, with whom we are engaged in a close and constructive collaboration to find the solution", highlighted the spokesperson, specifying that it is still "premature to comment on the outcome" of the negotiations "and on the options" that Brussels can "put on the table".
