Los Angeles – At this year's Oscars, one film in particular was convincing: "Nothing New in the West", a literary adaptation that, after 16 years, once again directs the spotlight on a German film.

The Netflix production, an anti-war film that chronicles the atrocities of World War I, won the Oscar for Foreign Affairs.

But that's not all: In addition, awards in the categories "Best Camera", "Best Film Music" and "Best Production Design" have now officially made "Nothing New in the West" the most successful Oscar film from Germany.

Last but not least, a native of Franconia has played a major role in the many successes.

Scene and costume designer Ernestine Hipper won the race for the title "Best Production Design".

"Never thought I'd make a war film": Fränkin prevails at the Oscars

After "The Tin Drum" from 1980, "Nowhere in Africa" (2003) and "The Lives of Others" (2007), it is only the fourth German film to win the Oscars.

Interesting fact about the Langenmosen native (district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, near Ingolstadt): Actually, she didn't want to be involved in the film at all.

She told

Bayerischer Rundfunk

(

BR

): "I never thought I would make a war film.

Never in life.

Never".

Ultimately, it is thanks to her colleague Christian M. Goldbeck that she did it.

The 49-year-old, who, like Hipper, also takes care of the arrangement of scenes in the film industry, was able to do a good job of persuading.

So the rest is Oscars history – along with the side note that what is probably the most coveted film award in the world is likely to evoke associations with the Free State of Bavaria from now on.
