Hundreds of people who gathered at the Paso del Norte border bridge ended up protesting their immigration status, after rumors spread on social networks about a false opening of the border to enter the US.

Hundreds of migrants gathered this Sunday afternoon at the entrance of the Paso del Norte border bridge, which connects Ciudad Juárez, in Chihuahua, Mexico, with El Paso, Texas.

Apparently a false rumor spread on social networks that they would let migrants pass to the United States was what motivated the hundreds of people to go to the place, according to a report by the affiliated station Noticias Telemundo in El Paso.

In videos shared on social networks, hundreds of people are seen running towards the port of entry and crowding together, including families with small children.

Upon reaching the bridge and seeing that the Mexican authorities were not allowing them to cross into the United States, many migrants began to protest.

In the midst of the tumult, dozens of people jumped over the security booths and tried to advance across the bridge towards US territory, reported Telemundo 48.

Agents of the Mexican National Guard and the Office of Customs and Border Protection deployed wire barriers and barricades along the bridge to hinder the passage of migrants.

For their part, the United States authorities also did not authorize the entry of migrants and closed northbound vehicular traffic to prevent a massive invasion, according to Border Protection and Customs officials.

The migrants remained on the bridge protesting immigration policies that have prevented them from seeking asylum in the United States for about an hour, and then began heading back to the Mexican side of the border.

Thousands of migrants wait in Mexican cities on the northern border for US courts to allow them to process their asylum cases from US soil.

While many others have been stranded in border cities like Juárez, after US authorities expelled them after crossing the border.

Human rights defenders have denounced the conditions in which many of these migrants wait for their asylum cases in Mexico, crowded into shelters or sleeping on the streets, where they are often victims of criminal organizations.
