Two tons of asbestos materials abandoned in the middle of nature.

The Rhône department lodged a complaint with the gendarmerie after the discovery on March 2 of an illegal deposit along the RD337 in the small town of Ardillats, in Haut Beaujolais.

An investigation has been opened to find the author of this wild deposit.

The community ordered the removal of the pile of waste, mainly fiber cement sheets, from a specialized company, at a cost of 6100 euros.

"The person at the origin of this wild deposit weighs the cost of his irresponsibility on all Rhone taxpayers",

indignantly Frédéric Pronchéry, vice-president delegated to the environment elected for the canton of Belleville.

Fiber cement, a mixture of cement and asbestos, also presents a risk for the residents of this village of 633 inhabitants.

"It's in the open countryside, relatively far from the village, but with the north wind of the past week, particles were able to fly away and spread"

, deplores the mayor Jean-Michel Morey.

As for the rains of the weekend, they were able to trickle the materials into the grass, which will retain them until the next episode of wind.

No such business in town

If the risk is low, the gesture is nonetheless

"unacceptable"

for the city councilor who invites anyone with information to make themselves known to the town hall.

"The volume is too large for it to be an individual and in Les Ardillats, there is no company that carries out this type of work"

, specifies the mayor.

He therefore wonders about a possible dump truck returning from a construction site on this axis linking Belleville to Chauffailles and which would have preferred to get rid of its cargo, with pallets and plastic film “

in a quiet corner”

.

“However, today companies are paid to evacuate this type of waste from construction sites”

, fulminates the elected official.

The abandonment of waste on the public highway is punishable by a fine ranging from 135 to 1500 euros.

The department specifies that additional sanctions such as the confiscation of the vehicle used to commit the offense are possible.
