Strike of the garbage collectors: in Nantes, the inhabitants called to keep their garbage cans and waste at home

2023-03-13T17:36:01.026Z

Since last Thursday, waste collection is no longer provided in Nantes. Consequence: the garbage cans overflow, pile up on the sidewalks and rubbish is spread on the road, even posing health and safety problems.

In many streets of Nantes, the scene has been repeated since the beginning of the garbage collectors' strike movement against the pension reform: trash cans left on the overflowing sidewalks.

With the gusts of wind on Sunday and Monday, the picture - not very appetizing - deteriorated further.

From now on, rubbish escapes from the containers, flying away and piling up on the roads.

What to make the happiness of a certain fauna but not that of the residents.

The latter will have to take their troubles patiently, and sometimes hold their noses, because the situation should last for at least several days.

“It's gathering in the streets of Nantes.

It will last all week

, warns Raynald Guibert, unionized at the CGT and member of the executive committee of the town hall of Nantes.

It amplified on Monday, it will amplify again on Wednesday.

Started on March 7, the garbage collectors' strike which paralyzes the Nantes waste collection sites (Étier, Janvraie and Great Britain) is hardening.

Since last Thursday, no more collection takes place in the streets of the City of the Dukes.

On Saturday, a blockade took place at the Étier site.

It brought together garbage collectors but also

"students, railway workers and other workers",

according to the CGT which wishes to

"let go of nothing"

.

In the 25 other municipalities of the metropolis - if the situation is

"degraded"

the days of national mobilization -, the collections remain maintained.

Nantes is therefore a local exception.

Sheltered from the weather

A specificity that the services of Nantes Métropole would gladly do without.

"It's a delicate situation"

, recognizes with Le

Figaro

, Mahel Coppey, EELV assistant in charge of waste.

Faced with this, she is counting on the civic sense of the inhabitants:

“If it is possible, I ask them to bring their garbage cans home or at least to shelter them from the weather”

.

Saying to herself

“aware that it is not easy for everyone”

, she hopes that people will make

“efforts”

to prevent the waste from spreading everywhere.

It ensures that at the same time, the community is mobilized to intervene

“on a case-by-case basis”

according to the issues

of “hygiene and safety”

.

In this sense, on Saturday, Nantes Métropole asked a private service provider to clean the Petite Hollande market.

It also reserves the right to intervene with regard to glass waste:

“The containers are full and the bottles piled up next risk breaking.

We are watching how the situation evolves every day.”

For the rest, no special system is in place for traders or individuals.

Johanna Rolland accused of "looking elsewhere"

A form of

status quo

arousing the anger of the opposition group Better living in Nantes which accuses Johanna Rolland, the mayor of Nantes, of

"looking elsewhere"

.

According to them, the recommendation to keep your waste at home

“is not up to the challenge”

.

Julien Bainvel, one of the group's elected officials, also reminds Le

Figaro

that the

"residents of Nantes pay more"

for the removal of their household waste since the tax relating to this management has recently increased and it appears therefore

"quite logical"

that a

"quick solution is found"

to the current problem.

“If the majority of this city put as much energy into avoiding this ecological disaster as they put into hiding behind the pension reform, the people of Nantes could find a clean city.

We deplore the greatest environmental irresponsibility of the elected representatives of this majority which is ecological only in name”

, tackle the elected opposition representatives of the right and the center in a press release.

In this text, they also ask the municipality to

"use private service providers"

as well as to establish

"minimum service by using requisition devices as provided for by law"

.

Faced with a

“proven health risk”

and

“illegal blockades”

, Julien Bainvel encourages Johanna Rolland

“to ask the prefect for the help of the police to allow a return to normal”

.

The solution of withdrawing from the reform

So many requests that do not find an echo with Mahel Coppey.

“As for using private operators, the answer is no.

In any case, it is materially impossible because they are already very mobilized

, ”she replies.

What about minimum service?

“There are no exceptions.

We don't have the right to do that

," she said.

As for the use of public force to lift the blockades, there again, it is a categorical no.

For her part, the elected official has a solution to solve the problem:

“The government must listen to the anger of the agents and withdraw its reform.

Wanting to impose a text that does not take into account tiring jobs and the impact on the health of workers, it is not possible.
