Magashi, an eastern black rhinoceros born on March 4 in the
Dvur Kralove
zoo
(Czech Republic), presented this Tuesday in society, represents another drop of hope to preserve an endangered subspecies.
It is estimated that 800 specimens of the eastern "diceros bicornis"
remain in the world
, a population that has been decimated by indiscriminate and poaching since the 1970s.
From then on, a preservation program aimed at this subspecies began in Dvur Kralove, about 150 kilometers east of Prague, which involved sending thirteen young specimens to Europe, which has allowed 39 specimens to be born since then
.
Magashi was born weighing 36 kilos and they hope that in a year he will reach half a ton on the scale.

This has allowed the zoo to return many of these animals to their natural habitat, in reserves in
Rwanda and Tanzania.
Dvur Kralove saw the birth of three new animals in the last year,
half of those born in the world
in captivity.
Magashi
was born weighing 36 kilos
and his parents are Maisha, a female from Dvur Kralove who gave birth for the fourth time, and Embu, a stallion male who arrived in 2020 from Chester Zoo (England).
The Czech Republic is carrying out a strong program to save endangered rhinos.
The small rhino "
gains a kilo of weight every day
and when it is one year old it will weigh about 500 kilos," its caretaker told EFE.
At the moment it depends on its mother's lactation, although it also
receives pieces of fruit and vegetables
, conveniently chopped.
For a year and a half, Magashi and her mother will share a roof in their cubicle,
isolated from the rest of the group.
From then on, the calf will be able to share the exit spaces with the others, with a group that currently consists of fifteen animals.
