Initiated for more than a year, the construction site of the future hospital on the island of Nantes should be completed in 2027. After the laying of the first stone in January 2022, a new stage has just been reached with the announcement of the distribution of services in future buildings.

"

It's about two years of work which we see a first concretization

", rejoiced the director general Philippe El Saïr, surrounded by health professionals, during a press conference organized Monday afternoon.

During the 2020-2021 period, department heads and medical representatives were consulted in order to build a coherent distribution of disciplines.

The Ile de Nantes will be an ultramodern hospital with buildings whose vocation we know well

”.

In concrete terms, alongside the emergency room, operating theaters/imaging and the woman-child-adolescent centre, four hospital buildings will be dedicated to the following departments: one for surgery, the other for oncology, the third for neurology and vascular pathologies and the last will be for medicine (rheumatology, dermatology, pneumology...).

Today, when you arrive at the emergency room of the Hôtel-Dieu [building which will no longer exist in 2027], if you have a stroke or if you have a heart attack which requires you to go to an interventional table, you have to 'we'll take you to the Laennec hospital.

There is no unity of place

”, illustrates Philippe El Saïr.

Whereas at the new hospital, if a patient comes in with chest pain and the staff realizes they have an acute cardiology problem, "

the cardiologists will be there

."

From now on, everything will be grouped together and all medical and surgical specialties will be represented.

In total, on the island of Nantes, there will be 1,241 beds and 286 places.

It will be a short-term hospitalization unit.

Heavy interventions will take place on the island of Nantes.

At the Laennec hospital, consultations for the inhabitants of the North of the metropolis

In the future configuration of the CHU, a third of the Nord Laennec hospital, located in Saint-Herblain, will also be maintained.

His disappearance had been considered before it was finally decided to keep a piece.

In June 2021, we realized that with the aging of the population, we were going to keep the Laennec site

”, recalls Professor Karim Asehnoune, resuscitator anesthetist and president of the Establishment Medical Commission (CME) of the CHU. from Nantes.

“We decided to keep the site with a capacity increase of 140 beds”.

There will be no major surgery here, but the medicine beds will cater for longevity and chronic pathologies, the latter being one of the corollaries of the aging population.

Within this framework, there is, for example, a cardiology, pulmonology, internal medicine department or a continuing care unit.

Will also be present: an intensive care unit - with the possibility of increasing capacity in times of high tension (+14 to 28 beds) - and general geriatric medicine beds.

There will also be a consultation and examination platform "

which will allow people who live in the north of the department not necessarily to enter the city center

", continues the director general.

"

This is linked to the University Hospital's desire to be present locally

".

This large multidisciplinary consultation should cover "

80 or 90% of the site's patient flows

".

This development involves work.

On Laennec, we have planned 20 million euros of work, refreshment and modernization

”.

Concerning the two thirds of the unused buildings, they will not be abandoned but converted.

“We are going to launch a call for expressions of interest procedure for the unused part to see what we can do with it

”.

Operators will propose conversion projects.

Bellier hospital "confirmed in its geriatric vocation"

The geriatric general medicine department of the Bellier hospital will be transferred to Laennec.

"

The Bellier site will be reinforced in its geriatric vocation

", indicates the CHU, with the reception of 28 beds for follow-up care and geriatric rehabilitation.

“It will thus offer a complete, local offer for the elderly in the east of the Nantes conurbation.”

This major project, the largest hospital project currently being conducted in France, which is the subject of controversy, will cost 1.2 billion euros.

The publication of a flash audit by the Pays de la Loire regional chamber of accounts on financing has been announced for spring 2023.
