Dana Ben Oved volunteered as part of her service in the prison service. After her death, the organization continued to accompany her family, but according to the law and its derivatives - she is not entitled to support. "They set up a corner in her memory, but when we asked for a mention on the grave that she died while volunteering for the state - we were denied," said her mother

Dana Ben Oved died in February two years ago at the age of 20 after a battle with cancer.

Dana, who was a resident of Gedera, volunteered in the service of the prisons as part of national service.

After her death, her family received her release grant, but beyond that - the law does not recognize her family's entitlement to treatment, rehabilitation or an allowance.

Her family and the "Dear Li-Yad and Bereaved Heart" organization started a fight on the issue.

Dana got sick for the first time at the age of 17. She underwent surgery to remove the tumor, and all the tests she performed after it showed that she is completely healthy.

However, her dream of becoming a fighter and serving in combat service in the IDF had to be shelved. "It didn't bother her, she was determined to volunteer and give herself to national service," shared Dana's mother, Gila Ben Oved.

As part of volunteering, Dana served in the Shavas, where she became an integral part of the staff. When she finished her first year of service, she continued to volunteer at Hotline 105 of the Ministry of Internal Security and was responsible for service girls to locate youth in need on social media. "Our Dana was a girl with a huge presence." , said Dana's mother, Gila Ben Oved. "She always reached out to people with disabilities and was determined to make her dreams come true," she added.

In February 2021, Dana passed away.

"At the age of 20, while serving, we were informed that cancer was knocking on the door again," said her mother.

"This time her strength couldn't take her, and within three months Dana passed away and left us and all her acquaintances with an abyss in our hearts. She was the crazy-girl of the house, full of joie de vivre and optimism," she added.

"After the oath, we learned that national service members are entitled to some benefits like discharged soldiers. We received Dana's discharge grant, but the state and the law do not recognize the family of the deceased, we are alone," said Gila.

"The casualty officer who was referred to us also explained that her hands were tied. We wanted recognition for Dana's entire period of volunteering and service which was significant for everyone - but we didn't get it," she said.

Another partner revealed that on every holiday or memorial, representatives from the Shevas come to their home and accompany them. "The Shevas set up a corner in Dana's memory and planted a tree with a sign,

At Shiva, Dana's family met Fini Rabinovitz, founder of the association "Yakir Li Yad Val Lev Leshchol".

Finney is the father of Desi Rabinowitz, who died at the age of 19 after a battle with cancer, and became famous due to the fight she waged for the patient's right to receive fair medical treatment.

Her father founded the association with the aim of directing the public's awareness and mobilizing it for practical support for families whose loved ones have died from diseases and disasters - out of mutual guarantee and social solidarity.

"On the eighth day, the family that woke up from the seven tries to put together the pieces of the puzzle that fell apart. Our association tries to help with what is possible such as covering mourning expenses, commemoration, counseling and psychological treatment - in the absence of means and through volunteers, claims Finney about the association.

The director general of the National Civil Service Authority, Reuven Pinsky, said: "The issue is being treated with all seriousness, and in fact, for about two years, an orderly process has been underway with the participation of senior officials in the Department of Families, Commemoration and Heritage.

There is already a draft of an advanced plan that lists three main steps that the authority intends to implement, and some of them are already being implemented.

The first, an intervention team to accompany bereaved families when giving bitter news, which will assist in organizing the funeral, the oath and everything else required.

The second, a commemoration project for the National Service volunteers, who died while fulfilling their duties and/or during their service, and the third - providing a supportive, emotional and financial response to the families.

The plan is in advanced stages and after receiving the relevant approvals it will be fully implemented."
