The Coburg Greens present their concept for a “traffic-calmed inner city” in a twelve-page immediate programme.

Cobrug – For some it is the way to a climate-friendly and more livable future, for others an unnecessary or ill-thought-out concept: The immediate program of the Greens in Coburg for a “traffic-calmed city center” meets with very different reactions.

"Traffic-calmed city center" in Coburg: Greens present immediate program

The emergency program of the Coburg-Stadt Greens district association, which the party uploaded to its website, deals with measures that can be implemented within a short time and without high investment costs.

In most cases, the aim is to free certain streets and zones in the city center of Coburg from private traffic and to reduce short-term parking spaces.

The modern parking garages around the city center would be enough to accommodate all visitors' cars.

The Greens refer to a statement by the Coburg city portal: "Coburg is the city of short distances!

You can get to the city center so quickly from our multi-storey car parks that it is not worth driving around for a long time looking for a short-term parking space.”

According to the Greens, reducing the short-term parking spaces would protect the environment, since there would be no need to look for a parking space, and create more space in the city center.

In addition, streets such as Rückertstrasse must be closed to through traffic, as this "makes up a large part of the traffic volume in the city center".

Criticism on social media – city councilor defends concept

The Green Party's emergency program has already made its rounds on Facebook, among others, but the proposed measures are often met with criticism.

The tenor: Many users doubt the feasibility of the concept or believe that it would do more harm than good to the city centre.

Users often criticize that the concept is not well thought out.

"Greens are just unworldly" and "If the Greens have their way, all inner cities will soon be dead," write two users on Facebook, for example.

However, some also praise the concept, believing that a traffic-calmed inner city would be more liveable and worth pursuing.

Green City Councilor Melanie Becker also defended the immediate program presented

Precisely because inner cities are dying out, there is a need for action.

Inner cities must be made more livable, children must be given space to play, and in times of online trading customers must be given incentives to visit.

The gastronomy, for example, would also be happy to have larger outdoor areas, explains Becker

.

The emergency program also gives examples where there are already traffic-calmed inner cities - and the concept works.

Among other things, the Spanish Pontevedara is listed as a prime example of successful inner city planning.
