Princess Leonor, heiress to the Spanish throne and future army chief, will begin her three-year military training in September, the Spanish government announced on Tuesday.
The daughter of the current King of Spain, Felipe VI, will turn 18 in October and the royal family has ruled that "
she must receive military training, like His Majesty the King and as is customary in other parliamentary monarchies
,” Defense Minister Margarita Robles told the press after the Council of Ministers.
First female commander of the armies of Spain
The government thus approved on Tuesday a decree governing the training and military career of the Princess of Asturias, announced the spokesperson for the left-wing executive, Isabel Rodriguez.
The Minister of Defense clarified that this training will begin in September, once the future head of state has completed her secondary education in Wales.
She will follow a year of instruction in the Army at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza (north-east), followed by another in the Navy at the "
Naval School of Marín
" (north-west) and finally a last one in the Air Force at the General Air Academy in San Javier (southeast), detailed Margarita Robles.
The latter stressed that Leonor was called to become the first female head of the armies in Spain.
If the princess follows the same path as her father, she will later study at a Spanish university (Felipe VI has a law degree from the Complutense University of Madrid) then will follow a master's degree abroad (her father studied international relations at Georgetown University in Washington).
