Large retailers have committed to lowering prices on a selection of products of their choice for three months.

After the flop of the “anti-inflation basket” project, the government finally reached an agreement in early March with large retailers.

To protect the French against food inflation

”, according to the words of Bruno Le Maire, the “anti-inflation quarter” thus sees the light of day.

It begins this Wednesday, March 15, for a period of three months.

What does it consist of ?

Each large-scale retailer will be able to practice lower prices tomorrow on a range of everyday food products of their choice.

They “

are therefore committed to going beyond their usual spring promotions

”, specifies the government.

Among the distributors mentioned are Carrefour, Intermarché, Auchan, Casino, Cora, Lidl, Aldi, or System U.

So that consumers can find their way around, a blue, white, red “

Anti-inflation quarter

” logo will be affixed to the products taking part in the operation.

The government ensures that the effort is focused on the margins of large retailers and not on those of farmers and welcomes "

the agreement and the effort of large retailers to participate in the fight against the high cost of living

".

The brands have therefore implemented various initiatives: Intermarché offers 500 items “

at attractive prices

”, Système U has 150 products “

at cost prices

”, Carrefour is launching the “

anti-inflation challenge

” system with around a hundred essential products, etc. The Minister of the Economy also warned that controls will be to be expected to ensure that the reduction on certain products really comes from a trimming on the margins of the distributors.

They will be able, from June, to renegotiate with manufacturers in order to lower prices.

However, the anti-inflation quarter is not unanimous.

Three associations, UFC-Que Choisir, Rural Families and Consumption Housing Framework of Life, believe that the government "

is content today to rely on the goodwill of large retailers to limit its margins (or claim do so through purely marketing operations)

.

Instead, they suggest suspending the “

SRP+10

” provision of the Egalim law, which obliges supermarkets to sell food products at 10% more than their purchase price.
