Wiesbaden/Moscow - The import of oil from Russia to Germany has practically come to a standstill more than a year after the start of the Ukraine war.

In January, 3,500 tons of oil were imported from Russia - a decrease of 99.9 percent compared to the previous year.

This was reported by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Monday.

At the same time, last year, Germany imported 2.8 million tons from Russia.

Oil in Germany: imports from Norway, Great Britain and Kazakhstan

The loss of oil supplies from Russia was compensated in January mainly with supplies from Norway (987,000 tons), Great Britain (959,000 tons) and Kazakhstan (928,000 tons), as the statisticians further announced.

Larger import quantities came from the USA and the United Arab Emirates.

According to statistics, the price per ton of oil in January was EUR 611.

The average price for 2022 was therefore 686 euros;

the price had peaked in June at 796 euros.

Sanctions against Russia: EU embargo and crude oil price cap

In December, the price cap for Russian crude oil came into force, which the EU, the group of seven leading industrial nations (G7) and Australia had agreed on.

Germany and its partners want to reduce Moscow's lavish income from oil sales.

At the same time, however, it should be ensured that Russia continues to supply the world market.

The price cap was introduced in addition to an EU embargo on Russian crude oil transported by ship.

This is intended to prevent Russia from circumventing the sanctions and selling the raw material to other countries at the prevailing market price.
