Another day of disruption.
Demonstrations in Israel, today (Photo: Reuven Castro)
Tonight, after about two and a half months of huge demonstrations, the country's President Yitzhak Herzog presented an outline for a compromise on the legal revolution.
According to the outline, the coalition will not control the committee for selecting judges and the position of legal advisor to the government will bind the government, and her dismissal will only be possible subject to the approval of a special committee.
However, the reason for reasonableness will be abolished in relation to government decisions in matters of policy and the appointment of ministers, and the rejection of laws by the High Court will only be possible with a two-thirds majority of an expanded composition of at least 11 judges. Also according to the outline, a basic law will be enacted in four readings, the last of which will require a majority of 80 Knesset members.
Many parties expressed support for the outline and called on both sides to reach a compromise.
However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the outline and said that it "perpetuates the existing situation", while the protest leaders said that the outline "only recognizes the needs of one side".
On the other hand, the chairman of the state camp Benny Gantz announced that his party supports the outline as it is, and the chairman of the opposition Yair Lapid welcomed the outline, although he did not accept it.
