Syrian President Bashar Assad will meet today (Wednesday) in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his first diplomatic visit since the devastating earthquake that struck the country in February.
According to the Syrian Presidential Office, al-Assad is accompanied by a large ministerial delegation.
The Kremlin said that Putin, who sent troops to Syria in 2015 to save the regime, and Assad will discuss cooperation in the political, commercial and humanitarian fields, in addition to "prospects for a permanent settlement of the situation in Syria and its surroundings."
The visit is taking place on the 12th anniversary of the outbreak of the war, in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed.
Assad's visit takes place after the reconciliation between Iran, its main ally alongside Russia, and Saudi Arabia, which at the beginning of the civil war in Syria supported the opposition.
This is alongside Syria's actual return to the fold of the Arab world, after long years of isolation.
