Why is it celebrated on March 17?
Saint Patrick is celebrated this Friday because the Church decided so by declaring that date as the day of the
patron saint of Ireland
, of the Irish and of their descendants in the world.
"Because of him,
the Celtic peoples converted to Christianity
. Irish emigrants took their religion and customs to the countries they went to," says a spokesperson for the Almirante Brown Irish-Argentine Association.
According to estimates from that association, there are
500,000 people belonging to the Irish community in Argentina.
The first immigrant from that country to become a nationalized Argentine in the naval force was precisely the one who gives the entity its name, Admiral
Guillermo Brown
.
He was born in Ireland in 1777 and died in Buenos Aires in 1857. In fact, his mausoleum is in the Recoleta Cemetery.
There are many versions about the link between Saint Patrick and beer consumption.
The concrete thing is that this Catholic festival expanded to non-religious areas.
And, since Ireland is famous for its beer production, it makes sense that that would be the most used drink to celebrate this occasion.
