The European Commission on Thursday drew the consequences of the unprecedented shocks that European industry has had to face over the past three years, from the pandemic to the war in Ukraine, from Beijing's growing protectionism in future technologies to the IRA, the massive plan of green subsidies implemented recently by Washington to boost American industry.
In Brussels, the watchwords are now the following: strengthening of the European industrial base, diversification of supplies with a much more careful selection of partners in key technologies… even EU sovereignty when possible.
Without a quick reaction, Europeans run the risk of missing out on the green and digital transitions and finding themselves trapped in new toxic dependencies.
