, suffered an important robbery early Thursday morning: criminals
destroyed tombs, tombstones and niches and took more than two tons of bronze
.
The staff denounced that the attacks are frequent, but that the one that occurred in the last hours was the worst in recent years.
The criminals accessed a warehouse in which plaques, religious images and planters were kept in bags, in many cases collected from different graves to be returned to relatives.
The material was distributed in more than a hundred bags.
Located in the west of the city, a necropolis that has a total area of twenty-four hectares, is regularly robbed in the absence of security personnel.

Criminals not only take bronze material.
In addition, the uniform and the tools that the employees use to carry out maintenance tasks and care of the place.
As the site did not have security personnel, the criminals had time to break the padlock on the main door, so it is not ruled out that they left the place on foot, through the same place through which they entered.
In recent months, various meetings have been held to evaluate the possibility of expanding the exterior walls or placing barbed wire, measures that seek to prevent criminal access.

In addition to thefts, it is common to cause damage to plaques, tombstones, and tombs.

The situation during the day is not easy for the workers either.
With only one guard, it is common for cleaning employees or gravediggers to be threatened in the presence of a thief who tries to take some valuable material.

Faced with repeated situations of insecurity, the employees arranged to raise attention to the public, although the cemetery remained open for visits.

“In the part of the gravediggers they robbed on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
Every day we find a new destruction
.
That is the impotence it gives us”, one of the employees explained to Canal 3.
"We no longer know how to ask for security," they claimed.
With 40,000 graves, the cemetery was inaugurated in 1886. Construction was finished around 1897. In 1907 it stopped being called the Municipal Burial Ground to have its current name.
The neighborhood where the cemetery is located also suffers from insecurity and when evening falls there are few businesses that remain open and open to the public.
