While Honduras has just announced its decision to establish official relations with the People's Republic of China, Taiwan is on the verge of losing one of its last diplomatic allies, and this, a few months before the presidential elections.
Under the principle of one China imposed by Beijing, which prohibits all relations with the democratic island on which it claims its sovereignty, Honduras will be forced to close its embassy in Taipei.
This situation does not prevent the self-managed island from establishing unofficial relations with many countries of the world.
In Taipei, the French Office in Taiwan and the American Institute of Taiwan, for example, act as unofficial embassies of France and the United States.
