400 kilometers from Moscow, Yefremov is one of those medium-sized towns where Russian society sometimes seems to be disintegrating before our eyes.
Out of sight, the cases of administrative or criminal cases opened against the slightest dissonant voices are multiplying.
But, in the town of 50,000 inhabitants, the semblance of normality that envelops Russia is shaken by an excessive zeal in supporting the army.
Along Lenin Avenue, Russian flags adorn every lamppost.
A giant mural representing soldiers, messages of support and other rallying symbols was painted on a wall.
After all, we are in Tula Oblast, Russia's "hero city" for its efforts in
the great war of 1941-1945.
"You see all these huge Zs, they stuck them on buildings of architectural interest
," whispered Olga Podolskaya, an independent district deputy, as she strolled around town.
