New strikes by the Verdi union again caused chaos at numerous German airports on Friday.

Düsseldorf/Cologne – Renewed warning strikes by the Verdi union on Friday morning caused massive flight cancellations at several German airports.

A good 90,000 passengers were affected nationwide, and almost 700 flights were cancelled.

There were warning strikes at the two largest airports in North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn.

This was confirmed by a Verdi spokesman.

The union called on workers in passenger screening, personnel, goods and cargo screening and public sector workers to walk out.

There are also strikes at Stuttgart and Karlsruhe/Baden airports.



"Due to the warning strikes, there is no regular passenger air traffic at Cologne/Bonn Airport today," the airport announced.

The warning strike will last until midnight and in some areas even until 7 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Munich Airport was hit by warning strikes in February.

Warning strikes: Verdi reports good participation

"We have a good participation, the mood is determined," said the Verdi spokesman.

At Cologne/Bonn Airport, the warning strike had already begun on Thursday evening at 10 p.m., in Düsseldorf the employees stopped their work on Friday at 3 a.m.

According to the union, around 500 employees are on strike in Düsseldorf alone.

The two airports advised passengers to check the status of their flight with their airline or tour operator before arriving at the airport.

Verdi had previously stated that passengers would have to expect delays, longer waiting times and flight cancellations at the two airports on Friday.

Passengers have these rights if they are affected by the warning strikes.

Flights via other airports

According to the airport, almost all flights at Cologne/Bonn Airport are canceled on Friday.

A spokesman said 144 of the originally planned 148 take-offs and landings of passenger aircraft could not take place.

Part of it will be processed via other airports, the rest will be canceled.

Düsseldorf Airport wants to maintain emergency operations.

An airport spokesman confirmed that 264 of the 391 originally planned take-offs and landings will be canceled.
