Gabriel Fuks
, the Argentine ambassador in Ecuador who was expelled from the country after the scandal over the escape to Venezuela of an official from that country convicted of corruption, spoke of the diplomatic scandal.
"Foreign Minister (Juan Carlos) Holguín is
irresponsible
, bilateral relations with Ecuador
are at an impasse
," he said this Sunday in a dialogue with Radio Diez.
Foreign Minister Holguín gave an interview to
Clarín
this Saturday in which he spoke about the growing tension between his government and Argentina due to the escape of María de los Angeles Duarte Pesantes and pointed to Fuks.
The government of Guillermo Lasso declared the Argentine ambassador "persona non grata", who was expelled from Ecuador.
Outside Quito, Fuks called Holguín a
"liar"
because he blames him for Duarte Pesantes' escape.
Argentina reciprocated the measure by expelling the Ecuadorian ambassador in Buenos Aires, Xavier Monge.
"I hope it does not continue to escalate, but I want to say that the Ecuadorian government has a fragility and a weakness that has to build this accusatory lie because it does not have a State and the Ecuadorian police that let Duarte pass," he added during the interview.
The scandal originated when María de los Angeles Duarte Pesantes - a former Ecuadorian official who was staying at the Argentine embassy in Quito to evade a trial for corruption - went on the run and later appeared at the Argentine embassy in Venezuela.
