Guatemala captures two alleged Mexican drug lords in less than 24 hours

Humberto Beltrán Cuen, alias 'El Chino', and Antonio Duarte Frías –both alleged members of the Sinaloa Cartel– were captured by the Guatemalan authorities. US justice is looking for them for fentanyl trafficking.


Guatemala detained this Saturday the alleged Mexican drug trafficker Humberto Beltrán Cuen, who is now facing an extradition order to the United States: he is the second Mexican linked to drug trafficking that the authorities of the Central American country have detained in the last 24 hours.

Beltrán Cuen, 70, was arrested during an operation in a residential area of ​​Guatemala City, according to a statement from the National Civil Police (PNC).

El Chino

, as Beltrán Cuen is nicknamed, is accused of conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine and fentanyl in the United States, in addition to various crimes for the use of firearms, the EFE news agency reported.

According to the investigation released by the local police, Beltrán Cuen belongs to a criminal organization based in Sinaloa.

On Friday, Guatemalan security forces also captured another Mexican, Antonio Duarte Frías, wanted by the United States for fentanyl trafficking.

With the capture of Beltrán Cuen, Guatemala adds 8 extraditable detainees during 2023, reported EFE.

Last year, the Guatemalan authorities captured 27 people wanted by the United States to be extradited to that country.
