“An exotic language”: when German students desert French lessons

SURVEY - The number of students learning French is falling. Between teaching methods and competition from other languages, how can this phenomenon be explained?

With these words from Prévert, Klara, a student in the 10th grade – the equivalent of the Second – of a high school in Munich, remembers having started learning French.

"From the first lesson, I understood that the task was not going to be easy

," she admits.

Of the 8.44 million students in Germany in 2023, the young girl is among the 15.3% of them to study the language of Molière.

A percentage lower than that of 2009, which then amounted to 19.1% according to the Federal Office of Statistics.

And for good reason, French appeals less and less to young Germans.
