On February 10, Emmanuel Macron announced it on Twitter.

The next United Nations conference on the oceans will be held from June 5, 2025 in Nice, for a period of 15 days.

“An agreement to protect the ocean as a common good of humanity, that is our ambition

,” he wrote after an interview with the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, at the Élysée.

A university, scientific and innovation symposium should first take place before the summit of 100 to 150 heads of state that the president intends to bring together;

not to mention the 20,000 or so delegates and many ministers expected.

This third conference, after those in New York in 2017 and Lisbon in 2022, is co-organized by France and Costa Rica.

It is in this perspective that the president of this Central American country, located some 9000 kilometers from the metropolis, was received with great fanfare this weekend by the city councilor of Nice.

Following a working meeting on this global event, a press conference was given on Sunday afternoon, followed by a reception at Villa Masséna during which Rodrigo Chaves Robles was made an honorary citizen of the city. .

"

With Rodrigo Chaves Robles, we are starting to work together today for the success of this event, which must have the ambition of giving the world a multilateral agreement as important as the Paris Agreement in 2015 for the preservation of the oceans which cover more than 70% of our blue planet

", indicated the city councilor during his speech.

At the same time pointing the way to

, at a time when

“the fight against

is becoming an urgent, planetary, priority and continuous necessity.”

And to continue:

“But there are several modes of action.

There are those who have chosen to cry, to demonstrate, to frighten, to rage, to block, to threaten.

And then there are those who have chosen to think, to dialogue, to inform, to share, to imagine, to experiment, to build.

To the President of Costa Rica, Christian Estrosi also praised his commitment to

"

sustainable and renewable natural energies

that your territory contains in abundance, hydraulics, geothermal energy, wind power, solar [...] This is why the UN has entrusted you, in association with France, with the organization of the next world ocean conference.

"

This is the whole meaning of this official visit which reminds us how much the world, if it finds the means to cooperate, if it knows how to listen to each other, if it gives pride of place to exchanges and believes together in its ability to transcend divisions for the common good, will be able to find the resources necessary to protect and preserve the oceans which regulate life

", he hammered again, boasting of being at the head of a
