A fine of NIS 40,000 imposed on Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon and the town, due to the use of the municipality's resources for Leon's election campaign, was paid entirely by the municipality alone - this was learned this morning (Monday).

About a month ago, District Court Judge and Chairman of the Regional Election Commission Aryeh Romanov accepted the petitions submitted against Leon by the "Awakening" faction in Jerusalem, which stated that during the election period the municipality distributed publications about various city events under the title "With the blessing of Moshe Leon", produced Videos in which he acts as a "presenter", she published billboards with his name, brochures summarizing the actions of the municipality as they are attributed to Leon and other elected officials in the city, and use of the municipal messaging system and the municipal Telegram groups to spread messages with his name and likeness.

The judge ruled that the municipality violated the propaganda laws in many publications, and used public resources for the benefit of Moshe Leon on a huge scale.

Therefore it was determined that the municipality and Moshe Leon must pay a total of NIS 40,000 for receiving the petitions.

The propaganda offenses were attributed to both the municipality and the mayor, so the fine that was determined is shared, but the Jerusalem municipality paid the whole.

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon responded that "the election committee did not impose a personal charge on the mayor, and the chairman of the committee acknowledged that the municipality, including the mayor, acted in accordance with the opinion that was placed before them.

Based on this, the Jerusalem municipality acted according to common law and paid the court costs."

Adir Schwartz, chairman of the Uzvarat faction and the chairman of the opposition in Jerusalem, attacked Leon: "It is not enough that the mayor wasted all of our tax money on personal propaganda and political promotion, He also pays the fine for the offenses from our pockets."

Schwartz claimed that "this is a mockery of the Jerusalem property tax paying public while the city continues to deteriorate economically. The mayor should remember that he works for the residents and not the other way around. I demand that he correct his actions and transfer the money from his pocket and not from ours."
