Pressured by inflation and with the fight for the adjustment in the fund plans, the Government discusses the increase in the minimum wage

2023-03-20T23:44:53.582Z

This Tuesday brings together trade unionists and businessmen in the Salary Council. The bid for an increase that impacts retirement and social programs.

With the pressure of

inflation

at record levels and the forecast that the greatest cost of the decision will fall on public accounts, the Government will meet this Tuesday at the

Salary Council

with representatives of the trade unions and the business chambers to define the

increase of the minimum

, vital and mobile salary that is located at $ 69,500.

The

official commitment

is focused on establishing an increase in the salary floor in line with the 60% guideline that the Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, intends to enshrine in the private sector parities, although for now with little success.

The Government's strategy is explained by the circumstance that

the greater effect of the increase will have to be borne by the public accounts

.

It is that the increase in the floor has a direct impact on the financing of the Potenciar Trabajo plans (the program for which around 1.3 million people earn the equivalent of half the minimum wage), updates the amount of 1.2 millions of pensioners who receive the minimum salary and retired with 30 or more years of effective contributions, and increases unemployment benefits and other assistance plans.

Sergio Massa aspires to consecrate a guideline of 60% in parities, although the unions are already going for greater increases.

For formal private activity, on the other hand, the effect of the increase in the minimum wage is very limited: less than 300,000 workers outside the agreement will benefit from the measure.

Although, for the informal sector of the economy, it usually works as the main reference for updating salaries.

Since last November, in parallel to ruling on the last increase in the salary floor, the Government launched a plan to try to unhook the increase in Potenciar from the evolution of the minimum wage and activated the formation of the so-called Popular Economy Council, so that That body is in charge of setting the amount of that benefit.

Finally,

this brand new council will meet for the first time on March 31

(it had initially been convened for this Thursday and then postponed), although - due to the lack of specific legislation that enables it - it will not be able to advance in the definition of any increase.

The

pressure from the social movements

, both those aligned with the Casa Rosada and the leftist groups, which stood up against the possibility of a "decoupling" also put the official strategy on hold.

For this reason, despite the discomfort of trade unionists and businessmen who refuse to be part of a negotiation in which -they say- "the needs of the State prevail-, the definition of the Salary Council this Tuesday will once again be mediated by the position of the Government regarding the cost of raising social and retirement plans.

Along these lines, if a 60% annual increase scheme is finally defined, the current salary floor would rise from $69,500 to a sum of

around $110,000

in stages and with a review clause.

In any case, the update would be far from the aspiration of the social movements and some union sectors such as the Autonomous CTA that

demand a salary floor equivalent to the amount of the basic food basket

for a typical family, which reached $177,063 in February.

Just this Monday, a CIFRA report warned that between last November -the month of the last meeting and increase ordered by the Council- and March the minimum wage accumulated a real reduction of more than 5%.

In relation to the basic food and poverty basket, the fall in the last four months is even greater since it would exceed 10%, according to the report.

In the November deliberations, the Salary Council agreed to a 20% increase in four tranches that were completed this month and which raised the salary floor to $69,500.

According to the official estimate with this adjustment, the year-on-year increase reached 110.5%.

With that improvement, the amount of the Boost plan has climbed up to $34,750 since March.
