Likud and Torah Judaism appealed to the chairman of the election committee and argued that the next elections should be held five years after the last elections, based on a loophole in the law related to the holding of the last elections in Hashvan. The legal advice to the Knesset opposes and claims that it should be held in 2026

The coalition is trying to extend the current term of office of the Knesset for five years, and to set the date of the next elections for November 2027 - this is according to responses submitted yesterday by the Likud and Torah Judaism to the Chairman of the Elections Committee, Judge Noam Solberg. These are responses to it submitted to the extension of the current Knesset, which is based on a flaw in the Knesset's Basic

Law which refers to the Hebrew date for the end of the term of office of the Knesset, in the month of Chesvan. On the other hand, the Knesset's legal advice believes that an examination of the language and purpose of the law suggests that the date of the elections will be four years later, as is customary, in November 2026. Likud and Torah Judaism claim that the next elections should be held five years after the last elections

because that the previous elections were held in the month of Cheshon, the law states that the next elections will be held "until the next month of Cheshon after the end of the four years from the day of the election".

"Our position is that the election date for the 26th Knesset will apply in the month of Chesvan 2018," reads the Likud response submitted by attorney Avi Halevi yesterday.

A similar response was submitted by Attorney Avraham Yostman on behalf of Torah Judaism. "Our position is that the date of the elections to the 26th Knesset will be (taking into account the leap year of 2017) on the first Tuesday of the month of Cheshon of the year 5 of the year 2018 Hoy says: B. Cheshon 2027, November 2, 2027".

The coalition's position is contrary to the position of the legal adviser to the Knesset, Sagit Afik, who opposes the request to extend the term.

"Examination of the language and purpose of a basic law: the Knesset suggests that the election date for the 26th Knesset falls on the third Tuesday of the month of Cheshon 2016 - 16 in Sion 2116," reads the response submitted by attorney Anat Goldstein to Judge Solberg.

"Although the applicant's interpretation is linguistically possible, it does not emerge explicitly from the text. In fact, according to him, the language of the section states that in any case where the elections after the dissolution of the Knesset were held in the month of Heshvan, the following Knesset will serve for five years. However, such an explicit provision is absent from the language the section".
