Hot summer 2023?

Weather expert Dominik Jung sees only a small deviation in the latest summer forecasts.

Kassel – The weather could be tough as early as April: Measured against the new average climate for the years 1990 to 2020, April could be one to two degrees warmer.

Weather expert Dominik Jung from

Wetter.net

looks at the coming months in a summer forecast, referring to the NOAA model, the US national weather service for climate forecasts.

This trend continued in May and then also in the summer.

“And no big surprise in June either,” says Jung.

"How should it be different?

Here, too, a deviation of one to two degrees is calculated.

So something is put on top of what is already a warm period.” A similar picture emerges in July.

These are the warmest years in Germany since 1881

Heat summer forecast from Wetter.de: Dominik Jung sees only one deviation

Only in August, according to the forecast, could there be only 0.5 degrees more in southern Germany than the average climate of the past 30 years, in northern Germany, however, one to two degrees more on the thermometer.

However, this still means that temperatures are above the average temperatures we are used to over the past 30 years.

"These are all just climate trends, nobody should plan their vacation accordingly," says Jung.

BR24 weather expert Michael Sachweh is certain that long-term forecasts are getting better and better, even if they are "still in their infancy".

The hot summer forecasts are reminiscent of the summer of 2022, which already felt extremely hot.

The result is concentration problems, circulatory problems, severe health problems for older or weaker people.

At the end of March, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change presented a new final report.

The key messages: climate change is progressing faster than expected and the current climate protection measures are far from sufficient to limit warming to 1.5 or at least to less than 2 degrees above the pre-industrial level.

In any case, the following applies: Provision and self-care are also important for the summer of 2023.

  • What to do when the summer gets particularly hot?

  • Adjust daily routine

  • Drink enough tea and water, avoid caffeine

  • Cool interiors with wet towels

  • Light linen clothing

  • Eat foods with a cooling effect

And at a higher level, people are also rethinking: How do cities manage not to drown in heat collapse?
