After
Alberto Fernández
appeared this Monday with the
former president of Ecuador Rafael Correa
in a human rights forum held by the Kirchner Cultural Center (CCK), the Ecuadorian president,
Guillermo Lasso
, questioned his Argentine counterpart for putting "their friendship personal" and "political identity" ahead of the "fraternal relationship" between the two countries.
The
diplomatic tension
originated after the former Minister of Transportation and Public Works
María de los Ángeles Duarte Pesantes
, sentenced to eight years in prison for a corruption case,
escaped through the Argentine embassy in Ecuador
, to later take refuge in Caracas , Venezuela.
Lasso had not referred to the bilateral rupture until Monday night, when he took advantage of Correa's visit in Buenos Aires to cross with the Argentine President.
"I am very sorry that
Alberto Fernández has put his personal friendship and political identity with Rafael Correa
ahead of the fraternal relationship between the peoples of Argentina and Ecuador," he wrote on his Twitter account.
In another tweet, he tagged different political figures in the region such as
Andrés López Obrador
,
Gustavo Petro
and
Gabriel Boric
, presidents of Mexico, Colombia and Chile respectively;
the Secretary General of the OAS,
Luis Almagro
;
the president of the PRO,
Patricia Bullrich
;
the founder of Fundación Libertad,
Gerardo Bongiovanni
;
the president of the Union of Latin American Parties,
Julián Obiglio
, and even
Mauricio Macri
.
Correa's presence in Argentina took place within the framework of the opening ceremony of the Third World Forum on Human Rights at the Kirchner Cultural Center, organized by the International Center for the Promotion of Human Rights (CIPDH Unesco).
After the diplomatic break with Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso questioned Alberto Fernández about his meeting with Rafael Correa.

During his opening speech, Fernández gave his support to several South American references on the left, including Correa: "Neoliberalism is attacking right now against the pillars of common life. We saw it in Bolivia with Evo Morales, in Brazil with Lula Da Silva ,
in Ecuador with former President Rafael Correa
and we see him in Argentina with Cristina Fernández de Kirchner".
The diplomatic rupture between Argentina and Ecuador
Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Juan Carlos Holguín announced last Tuesday that his country declared the
Argentine ambassador in Quito, Gabriel Fuks
, persona non grata.
He did so at a press conference marking the
bilateral escalation in the case of the Correista official Duarte Pesantes, a refugee for two years in the Argentine embassy
in Ecuador and fled to Venezuela in unclear situations.
As a result of that decision, Fucks was expelled by the government of Guillermo Lasso and was given a maximum period of 72 hours to leave that country.
The former Minister of Transportation of Ecuador, María de los Angeles Duarte Pesantes.
She took refuge in the Argentine residence in Quito, in August 2020 and left there on Monday, March 12.
As soon as that decision was known, Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero arranged the same with the Ecuadorian ambassador
Xavier Monge Yoder
, who was already flying to Quito that Tuesday.
"Therefore regretting the
incomprehensible decision of the Ecuadorian Government
to request the withdrawal of Ambassador Gabriel Fuks from Ecuador, it has been decided
to adopt the same situation
with respect to the Ecuadorian Ambassador in Argentina," they made official in a statement.
In addition, the Argentine Foreign Ministry insisted on rejecting any link between Fucks and the escape of Duarte Penantes and blamed the situation on
the "ineffectiveness" of the Ecuadorian authorities.
The former Minister of Transport and Public Works of Rafael Correa, sentenced by the courts in her country to eight years in prison for a corruption case in which Correísmo is also accused, was a "guest" at the Argentine embassy in Ecuador.
She had been staying in one of the houses that are part of the 3-hectare diplomatic complex since August 2020.
Fernández
granted the woman political asylum last year.
But an already weakened Lasso did not give him the safe conduct to leave Ecuador.
Fernandez and Cafiero even went to the OAS for the case.
For his part, Correa asked Cristina Kirchner.
Duarte Pesantes fled from the embassy and reappeared to the surprise of many in a meeting with the Argentine ambassador in Caracas, Oscar Laborde.
