Ran Erez announces a strike, February 3, 2023 (teachers' organization)

The national leadership of parents called for the suspension of classes in grades 7-12 tomorrow (Wednesday). The reasons for the move are criticism of the new graduation outline by Education Minister Yoav Kish, as well as a protest against the sanctions of the teachers' organization. The Ministry of Education clarified in response that classes will be held as usual.

Special education and any activity related to preparation for graduation will be excluded from the strike. In any case, unlike the teachers' organizations, the parents' leadership does not have the power to apply comprehensive sanctions, since the parents are not "members" of it. This means that the extent of the disruptions will depend on the degree of responsiveness of the parents and identification with the struggle - also at the price of registering their children's absence.

The parents' committees in various localities have already announced that they will cooperate with the move.

Among them are those of Tel Aviv and Beer Sheva - where a demonstration will be held at 10:00, at the expense of the studies.

"The leadership of the parents says enough to the abuse of the Ministry of Education and the organization of teachers in our children," the board in Beer Sheva wrote to the parents.

"The parents' leadership and the student council call for an immediate end to the sanctions of the teachers' organization. Enough with the lack of consideration for students and parents. Enough with the abuse of the teachers' organization."

In the announcement of the national parents' leadership, they emphasized that the strike will take place "simultaneously with the meeting of the Knesset's education committee, which deals with the issue of the graduation schedule. The shutdown will take place due to the publication of the new graduation schedule and due to the sanctions of the teachers' organization, which seriously harm the students' preparations for graduation."

They also clarified that "all preparations for high school graduation, including special education, orientation tours and/or any outings for non-movable outdoor activities and special education - are excluded from the strike. Special education parents are invited to choose to join the strike. The expected attempts by such and other parties to torpedo the strike tomorrow will not succeed."

"We do not regret that the timing of the shutdown is not suitable or convenient for the Ministry of Education and the teachers' organization," the organization further stated.

"The parents and children of Israel say as much as this. You will not take us hostage in your power games and bending your arms. The parents and children of Israel are establishing new rules of the game starting tomorrow."

The Ministry of Education clarified: the studies will be held as usual

The Ministry of Education attacked the parent leadership and accused it of spreading wrong information regarding the reform.

"We regret the parents' organization's announcement," he said.

"The organization is wrong and misleading, especially the students, and in terms of 'Nea demands and Nea fulfills' as the parents' organization demands, that no strikes take place at the expense of the male and female students, this is what is expected of them as well. Needless to say that studies will take place as usual and we expect all parents to send their children to school as usual" , clarified.

The ministry also stated that "the flexible baccalaureate program in the humanities subjects is a program that was built after an in-depth process of public participation of more than ten thousand participants, including discussions at round tables and questionnaires in which the education staff and the parents' organization were asked. The program receives broad support in the field: administrators, teachers, academics And more. In this case, the parents' organization does not represent the majority of opinions in its statements."
