Left-wing opponents of pension reform bet on the RIP

DECRYPTION – The shared initiative referendum, possible since 2008, is brandished by opposition deputies and senators after the outbreak of 49.3.


This complex procedure has never succeeded since its introduction into the Constitution in July 2008 under the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy.

However, on Monday, the Constitutional Council received the bill from 252 opposition deputies and senators for a shared initiative referendum (RIP).

It had been filed Friday on the desk of the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet.

The proposal provides that

“the legal retirement age cannot be set beyond 62 years”

Valérie Rabault, socialist deputy and signatory, sums up the issue:

“The RIP is the only instrument that can impose a referendum without going through the President of the Republic.”
