A dazzling flash and a huge explosion: A meteorite impact on the moon makes for spectacular pictures.
Munich – meteorite impacts on earth?
Not only are they the subject of Hollywood disaster movies, they are also a real threat to our planet as an impact could potentially end life as we know it.
And meteorite impacts on the moon?
In fact, they happen all the time.
And also give the moon its cratered appearance.
Impressive images prove this, because a telescope from Japan recently filmed a huge impact.

"It was a huge flash that lasted more than a second"
Daichi Fujii, the curator of the Hiratsuka City Museum, managed to capture it.
He posted the video on Twitter and wrote, "I was able to capture the biggest moon impact flash in my observational history!
This is an image of a moon impact flash that occurred on February 23, 2023 at 20:14:30.8 taken from my home in Hiratsuka.
It was a huge flash that lasted more than a second.”
Thin lunar atmosphere hardly slows down the impacting rocks
Unlike the earth, the moon does not have a comparable atmosphere.
Meteors that would collide with our home planet usually burn up in the layers of air.
Not on the moon, however: There they hit with full force and thus ensure the characteristic appearance of the earth's satellite.
The moon's thin atmosphere does little to slow the impacting rocks.
To understand: One speaks of meteors in general when one means "shooting stars".
If they land on Earth (or the moon in this case), the correct term is "meteorite".
Larger celestial objects are called asteroids.
Comets, on the other hand, are made not only of rock but of more volatile material.
Speaking of the moon: people will be walking on our satellite again in two years' time.
NASA has had a new space suit developed for this purpose, which has now been presented.
