MK Rotman's compromise proposal (Knesset Channel)
The Institute for National Security Studies issued this morning (Tuesday) an urgent "strategic warning" against the promotion of changes in the legal system in their current form, which it claims will "severely harm the functioning of the IDF, reduce Israel's ability to deal with its enemies, endanger relations with the United States and sabotage the economy."
"Israel is facing a combination of serious threats to its national security, economic deterioration in the shadow of a global economic crisis, and widening cracks in its relations with the United States," the institute's warning reads.
"At the same time, Israeli society is in an unprecedented internal conflict due to the promotion of legal reform, which amplifies these threats and harms the ability to deal with them."
It is also written that "without insisting on the controversial program of the reform, there is no doubt that this is a far-reaching change of the administrative and legal rules of the game, which is perceived by many as a real threat to democracy and which is being promoted at lightning speed without being given a real opportunity to form a broad consensus. As a result, the protest is intensifying wide-ranging public, which inevitably permeates all life systems in Israel, including the IDF."

In light of this, it says, the institute "considers it its duty to issue an urgent strategic warning - the promotion of the legal reform is already creating an unprecedented internal crisis, which amplifies the security, political and economic threats facing us. We warn that the continuation of the move will seriously damage the social resilience, the spirit of the IDF and its functioning ;
will reduce Israel's ability to face its enemies, and continue to win the support of its friends, led by the United States; and will sabotage its economic strength and especially high-tech."
