San Francisco, California – Twitch announces that 400 jobs will be cut.

The news comes just days after the resignation of former CEO and Twitch co-founder Emmet Shear.

The Amazon subsidiary cites the consequences of miscalculations during the corona pandemic as reasons.

Streamers are expressing their concerns about new Twitch boss Dan Clancy.

New Twitch CEO fires 400 employees - 20 percent of the workforce is laid off

What happened?

On March 16, former CEO and Twitch co-founder Emmet Shear announced his retirement.

Now, shortly thereafter on March 20th, under the leadership of the new CEO Dan Clancy, a total of 400 employees are to be laid off.

That brings Amazon's layoffs to about 27,000 since December 2022. Reportedly, 400 employees at Twitch represent about 20 percent of the total workforce.

The reason:

Miscalculations during the corona pandemic are cited as the reason.

In an internal message and on the official Twitch blog, Dan Clancy writes: "

Like many other companies, our business has been impacted by the current macroeconomic environment and user and revenue growth has not been what we expected.

Although the company grew rapidly during the lockdown in 2020 and 2021, growth is now slowing down again.

This cost saving measure started in 2022 when we decided to slow down recruitment processes and continued in 2023 with budget cuts.

This was necessary and has had a significant impact on our costs.

However, in order to run our business even more sustainably, we have made the difficult decision to downsize our workforce, which is the highest cost to our company.

What does that mean?

What consequences this has for viewers and streamers is not entirely clear.

Twitch cut the salary of top streamers and wants to find new ways to place more advertising in the future.

It is conceivable that the austerity measures will cause changes on the user side and also cause streamers to take action.

Twitch development during the Corona pandemic

With the start of the first restrictions on the corona pandemic at the beginning of 2020, the number of viewers on Twitch exploded.

In 2019, almost 3 billion hours were watched quarterly on Twitch, which increased to over 5 billion hours in 2020.

In the first half of 2021, Twitch peaked at around 6.5 billion hours watched and since then the numbers have been falling again.

At the end of 2022, the number of viewers will remain at almost 5.5 billion hours, as high as at the beginning of the pandemic.

Twitch lays off 400 employees – streamers are afraid of their new boss

Streamers report to the new boss:

Even before the bad news of the layoffs, major Twitch streamers shared their concerns about Dan Clancy.

As CEO, Emmet Shear has made little effort to get in touch with creators and streamers, but things are said to look even worse with the boss, who is almost 20 years his senior.

Top streamer MoistCritkal explained on YouTube: "

Dan is almost 20 years older than Emmet Shear - he's 59 and he has no Twitter account or little social media in general.

"

After meeting with Twitch President Dan Clancy at TwitchCon, IRL streamer Jakenbake said, "I don't feel confident as a streamer on the platform with someone who is that out of touch..." "I walked

away feeling, like, depressed. "

IRL streamer Jakenbake met Dan Clancy at TwitchCon and expressed concerns: "

I don't feel confident as a streamer on a platform with someone who has so little connection

".

How bad it really gets for streamers can only be imagined.

Many other Twitch stars also complained about the new CEO and hoped for a new era after Shear's resignation.

Streamer Asmongold pressed the money button on Twitch - more such monetization options are quite conceivable.
