Problems for Russia due to the return of Wagner's ex-convicts

Russia is facing a double problem with the discharge of thousands of former Wagner group inmates, who are serving the six months of mercenary service in Ukraine to which they pledged in exchange for their release from prison.

On the one hand, his march will weaken the invading Russian forces and on the other, the return of thousands of ex-convicts to Russia presents a challenge at home, according to estimates by the British Ministry of Defense in its latest intelligence report.

The document recalls that "in the coming weeks, thousands of Russian convicts who have fought for the Wagner group will probably be pardoned and released", since the peak of hiring of inmates to serve six months in the private militia occurred in autumn.

The head of the Wagner group, businessman Yevgeni Prigizhin, toured the prisons to recruit inmates with the promise of pardoning their sentences in exchange for fighting in Ukraine.

"Although about half" of these ex-convicts have been killed or injured in Ukraine, Wagner plans to fulfill that promise for the survivors, with license certificates they say are covered by a decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Given that Wagner has already been "prohibited" from recruiting more inmates, according to London, "this exodus will worsen the personnel problems" of the militia and Russian forces.

"In addition, the sudden influx of often violent criminals with recent and sometimes traumatic combat experiences is likely to pose a significant challenge to Russian wartime society."

On the conflict in Ukraine, Xi stressed that “there are constantly increasing rational and peaceful voices.

Most of the countries support an easing of tensions”.

"They want peace and talks to be promoted, and they are opposed to adding more fuel to the fire," Xi said during the four and a half hours of conversation with Putin, reminding him that "historically, conflicts have always been resolved on the basis of dialogue and negotiation”, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The president also recalled that China issued a position paper in February in which it called for "a political solution" to the conflict, in addition to opposing unilateral sanctions against Russia.

“We believe that the more difficult it is, the more space should be left for peace.

The more intricate the conflict becomes, the more we must do not to abandon efforts for dialogue," Xi said, according to the statement.

He also stressed that China is willing to "continue to play a constructive role in promoting a political solution to the conflict."

China was one of the countries that abstained from voting on a resolution condemning the Russian invasion in the UN Assembly, and although it has not explicitly supported Moscow, it has opposed sanctions against Russia because "it does not They solve problems."

Xi is expected to hold talks after his visit to Russia with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while the West is skeptical of attempts at Chinese mediation.

Turkey says Sweden's efforts to join NATO 'fall short'

Turkey considers that Sweden has made "some positive progress" for Ankara to lift the veto on its entry into NATO, but believes that progress still "falls short" on the financing of "terrorism" in relation to the Party of the Kurdistan Workers (PKK).

"They have amended the anti-terrorism law, which we appreciate, and they have also made an amendment to the Constitution. But unfortunately, the anti-terrorism law falls short," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu told a press conference.

The head of Turkish diplomacy has specifically referred to Swedish anti-terrorism legislation to prevent the PKK from "raising money to finance terrorism."

Cavusoglu's statements come after Ankara approved Finland's entry into the Alliance last Friday, and announced that it is maintaining the veto on Sweden for now, at the expense of continuing diplomatic talks between the two countries.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has said he is not surprised by Turkey's decision and remains confident that his country can join NATO soon.

"We knew that there was a possibility that it would happen. (...). It has not been a surprise. It was not our wish but we respect Turkey's decision, and we hope to enter quickly," Kristersson said.

Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO last year after Russia's military intervention in Ukraine, and the invitation to join the organization was approved at the allied summit in Madrid after Turkey lifted its veto at the last minute in exchange for certain conditions, embodied in an agreement.

Ukraine assures that its army is also progressing "in certain areas" of Bakhmut

Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister, Hanna Maliar, has assured that despite the fact that Russian forces have advanced in the besieged city of Bakhmut, the Ukrainian army has also made progress "in certain areas".

"Active fighting is taking place, also in the city. There have been some enemy advances. At the same time, we have also made progress in certain areas. The defense of Bakhmut continues," she said in televised statements.

Maliar has defended that the Ukrainian commanders have not ordered the withdrawal of Bakhmut despite the tightening of the Russian siege, alleging that the fighting that is taking place in this city of Donetsk makes it easier to "reduce the offensive potential of the enemy."

Ukrainian troops are blocking the Russian advance at that point, he has pointed out, adding that, despite the high number of Ukrainian casualties, the enemy's losses are much higher in comparison.

Specifically, the Russian casualties affect "the most professional units, that is, Wagner's units," Maliar pointed out, referring to the group of mercenaries.

The Deputy Defense Minister also alluded to a recent article in the US newspaper

The Washington Post

that spoke of the lack of experience of many Ukrainian recruits, sent to the front to replace the casualties of veterans.

"It is undeniable that before the invasion there were only 200,000 military personnel and now there are more than a million. It is a challenge to train such a large number of people," she admitted.

Borrell assures that the EU has no evidence that China supplies Russia with weapons for war

The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, has reiterated that he has "no evidence" that China is supplying Russia with weapons in the war against Ukraine, nor that it intends to do so.

"I can only say one thing: I have no evidence that China has supplied Russia with weapons, and I have no evidence that it is planning to do so," Borrell assured after the meeting of the community foreign and defense ministers.

Asked about this possibility, Borrell added: "I cannot guess what will happen the day after tomorrow, but today, neither I nor anyone who could have it, has communicated any evidence to me."

As explained by the senior official, if China had been supplying weapons to Russia, "we would know, because the weapons are used."

"Which is not to say that we obviously don't have to be vigilant," he pointed out.

Regarding the visit to Moscow by Chinese President Xi Jinping to meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, the head of community diplomacy said that this issue was not discussed at the meeting.

"I am not sure that I know well what such important personalities as Presidents Putin and Xi have decided," he said.

Regarding "the so-called peace plan" presented by China during the UN General Assembly, Borrell has stated that, "frankly, a very great intellectual effort is needed to consider it a peace plan."

"It is rather a compilation of China's positions on the matter, which are well known," he concluded about the meeting between Putin and Xi.

Putin and Xi conclude their informal meeting in the Kremlin after 4.5 hours

The Russian, Vladimir Putin, and Chinese, Xi Jinping, presidents concluded their informal meeting in the Kremlin on Monday after four and a half hours of talks.

Xi, who arrived in Russia today on a state visit, left the Kremlin after the negotiations and the dinner with which his Russian colleague entertained him.

At the beginning of the meeting, Putin admitted having "carefully studied" Beijing's proposals "to resolve the serious crisis in Ukraine."

The Kremlin, which has highlighted Beijing's "balanced position" regarding the conflict, has anticipated that Putin would give Xi definitive explanations about the causes of the problem.

Both Ukraine and the West have called on Xi to use his influence on the Kremlin chief to stop the fighting as soon as possible.

Regarding the Chinese initiative, Kiev has warned that, before implementing it, Russia must withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory, alluding to the fact that Beijing's plan does not allude to territorial integrity or the illegal annexation of four Ukrainian regions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is waiting to talk with Xi via video conference after he finishes his trip to Russia.
