Xi Jinping in Russia: a visit that destroys any peace attempt in Ukraine

2023-03-21T13:04:00.846Z

Beijing's mediation plan was deflated by Xi himself, by proclaiming that 'China and Russia are strategic partners'.

President Xi Jinping

himself deflated

the importance of the China Peace Initiative to stop the war in Ukraine, which was the main question mark of his visit to Moscow to meet Vladimir Putin.

Now everything is said: Xi Jinping proclaimed on Tuesday that "China and Russia are strategic partners."

It was discussed whether both powers were allies, now it is clear that

there is a step higher

.

Strategic Partners represents

the maximum union

and confirms the will to make the project of a Global Security Initiative a reality, proposed by Chinese diplomacy, which represents

a challenge to North American world dominance.

The panorama of the struggle between the great world powers has been clarified and an ominous shudder cannot be avoided.

The Chinese refusal to approve the Russian invasion of Ukraine allowed Xi Jinping to keep in suspense the assumptions that in Moscow he could give a boost in the direction of

at least a ceasefire

or talks to promote negotiations.

Vain illusions, to tell the truth that they were fading.

The United States dryly denied any possibility of a Chinese peace initiative.

Putin also made it clear that he did not agree to negotiate

his territorial conquests

.

And the Ukrainians said that before negotiating anything, Russia had to

withdraw completely.

Now the official declaration of “strategic partners” puts the Ukrainian war

in the background

.

Xi's trip to Moscow has shown that the top-level alliance between the two powers is the priority.

A strategic partner cannot seriously carry out a mediating initiative that is carried out by the other partner.

Furthermore, China

has never even

veiledly reproached the Russians for the bloody results of their invasion disguised as “Special Operations”.

Along these lines, the Chinese always referred to war as "crisis" or "conflict."

The economic priority

Xi and Putin are focused on how to strengthen a bloc opposed to the West and on the economic agreements between Russia and China, which also

institutionalize the Chinese currency as the currency of exchange

instead of the dollar.

The Russians highlighted the "boom" of annual exchanges that are reaching

200 billion dollars.

But the Chinese have revealed some

eagerness

to reinvigorate relations with European countries, after the United States' top allies led the way in trade with China last year, reaching $800 billion.

The United States, despite the sanctions that it has approved years ago against China, was confirmed in 2022 as a fundamental partner with exchanges of 690 billion.

For China, these data indicate the need for a path that is not interrupted by clashes with Westerners that could damage the expansion of the silk routes and world traffic that China needs to always be open and without collisions.

The prolongation of the war in Ukraine has actually received a boost from Xi's visit to Moscow,

demolishing expectations

of somehow diplomatically straightening out the conflict.

Now the unknown is how and when China will be able to fraternally

influence the Chinese strategic partner

that has run out of the propaganda weapon of its peace initiative that sounded like an attempt at mediation.

For China, this is a role that has its discomforts.

It is no longer possible to go off on a tangent of showing that his position against Putin's decision to invade Ukraine maintains it as a moderating alternative to the other protagonists faced in the war with Russia.

Being a strategic partner allows rivals to shout that the king is naked in his true intentions.

There is no intermediation that is worth it

, at least as long as events, probably terrible, do not occur that dramatically change the perspectives.

Like Mambrú,

China also went to war

, via Moscow.
