At least 13 people were killed and close to a hundred people were injured in an earthquake that struck Pakistan and Afghanistan - this is what officials in both countries said tonight (Wednesday).
The noise, with a magnitude of 6.5, was well felt in other countries in the region and its epicenter was in a mountainous area in Afghanistan.
In Pakistan, at least nine people were killed and 44 others were injured in the northwest of the country and hospitals in the region were put on alert.
In neighboring Afghanistan, a health ministry official said at least four people were killed and another 50 were injured.
Authorities in both countries reported damage to buildings following the strong earthquake.
According to the Seismological Center of the European and Mediterranean Region, the tremor was felt in a radius of more than a thousand kilometers in areas where about 285 million people live in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.
South Asia is a very seismologically active region, and last year more than a thousand people were killed in an earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.
In 2005, about 73 thousand people perished in a powerful earthquake that devastated Pakistan.
