Will the children of the country break their piggy bank to save the Tchanquée hut n°3?
Built in 1945 by carpenter René Landry, the building on stilts with red shutters is on the verge of collapsing.
However, to be preserved and renovated identically, the emblem of the Arcachon basin requires expensive work, estimated at 935,000 euros excluding tax.
The town hall of La Teste-de-Buch, which manages the places belonging to the coastal conservatory, launched an appeal for donations from the general public on Monday to preserve this symbol at all costs.
And failing to be selected by the heritage lottery, the City signed an agreement on Monday with the Aquitaine branch of the Heritage Foundation which accompanies this fundraiser.
Objective: to collect 366,000 euros from individuals in order to supplement the subsidies from the State, the Region and the municipality granted to the project.
Open for 24 hours, the online kitty already showed 5,650 euros on the counter on Tuesday, thanks to 50 donors who seem to share the same love for the place.

Old resorts
The stilts of the Tchanquée cabin n°3 really need it.
Already, it was necessary to put a bandage on their wooden legs by consolidating them in 2021 because they threatened to collapse.
To ensure that they can now last, they will be the only elements of this cabin to be carved in an exotic water-resistant wood.
The passageways of the terrace and the staircase, which are about to return to their original form thanks to period photos, will be shaped in local wood (even with maritime pines from the used forest burned last summer) .
The roof and the cladding, whose current aspects will be preserved, will overhang the shutters and the balustrades, whose red must be revived.
Inside, joinery, old furniture and ancestral objects will be restored and enhanced.
A few steps away, the hut with white shutters, also known as n°53, built in 1948 for the holiday resort and rebuilt from top to bottom in 2007, has since been open to children in CM2 of Teste-de-Buch.
For the first time, the Tchanquée hut with red shutters will be open to the general public within the limit of a gauge of 19 people.
The works, which should begin in October 2023, should be completed in May 2024.
There are fifty-three tchanquée huts on the bird island in the Arcachon basin.
