On video: stormy demonstrations in Paris in protest of the retirement law (Reuters)
Hundreds of people have been arrested across France since Monday, as renewed protests erupted following the opposition's failure to dissolve the government through no-confidence votes.
On Monday night alone, 234 people were arrested during clashes between the police and protesters.
In the television broadcasts, the policemen were seen firing tear gas and attacking the demonstrators in several cities, combined with special policemen on motorcycles who beat protesters who stood in their way.
In videos shared on social media, Paris last night looked like a war zone, with entire areas shrouded in smoke and piles of rubbish on fire on the roads.

French citizens are protesting against a controversial law by President Emmanuel Macron, which raises the retirement age in the country from 62 to 64.
The law passed last week in the conservative Senate, but in an unusual move, Macron decided not to put it to a vote in the National Assembly (the lower house of the parliament) either, using the clause in the constitution that allows him to do so.
However, the decision was met with outrage from parliament and the public.
